I am currently finishing up my B.A. in Public Policy. Unfortunately, I'm not overly strong in the math department. This would make it difficult for me to do an M.S. in a hard science area. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could do? Working with wildlife is my dream, but I'm not sure what academic route I should take.

The faculty in the Department of Biological Sciences is committed to the highest standards of scientific integrity and academic function. This commitment carries with it unwavering support for academic freedom and the free exchange of ideas. It also demands the utmost respect for the scientific method, integrity in the conduct of research, and recognition that the validity of any scientific model comes only as a result of rational hypothesis testing, sound experimentation, and findings that can be replicated by others. The department faculty, then, are unequivocal in their support of evolutionary theory, which has its roots in the seminal work of Charles Darwin and has been supported by findings accumulated over 140 years. 40. 4 Apr 2008 at 6:18pm
I heard this somewhere and that 80% of the fatal/injury related city accidents happen within these intersections with street lights. It also said that most happen within 4 seconds of lights changing red or green. How accurate is this? Does anyone know? I only ask this because I trust statistics more when they are referenced to a peer-review academic journal or major data/government organizations (like department of transportation .gov websites). Cars can also get in accidents when changing lanes, at 4 way stops, at stop signs, by nipping a parked car when veering too much to the side. So that's why I was wondering about controlled intersections. If you find out when you're more likely to get in fatal car accidents, or at least get injured, you can adapt your driving habits from there. When you know where you're more likely to get in accidents that are likely to hurt/kill you, it seems like that can be more of an advantage to you when you practice situational awareness when driving.

  41. Voting Question: Getting into a music department (majoring music)?
  42. 31 Mar 2008 at 5:24pm
can you go to a good college with a good music department with average academics? Let's say I went to a lot of recitals, participate in competition for a certain instrument, do other stuff outside of school. And lets say I play really well. Would I still be able to be able to attend t hat music department without any problems because of my average academics? Would it be harder to get into the music department if my academics were low? Oh and another question. If I were to get a music scholarship of some sort for a music department, like a 10,000 dollar, does that mean that pays for the college too? or is it just for the music department, and make me pay for the college and the music department separately? Last question: If academics matter, should I take spanish 3 honors and get Bs or spanish regular and get all As? Or does the music department not care at all? Also, could someone give me some brief classes I should take in my high school year?

Hey im pretty excited about all three schools but I ultimately have to pick one. Any advice or stories from any current or former students is greatly appreciated. Im looking to major in political science (IR concentration) and go on to grad school and eventually work for the State Department and become an ambassador. Or possibly law school/MBA. A couple things I want to know: which school has strongest poli sci program academics (competitiveness) their reputation among grad schools and employers best professors hottest girls haha best overall experience (school + partying) I got into the Honors program as well at UCSB so im kinda leaning in that direction but I'd love to hear some different opinions. thanks

  47. Voting Question: My Personal Statement - please help.?
  48. 22 Mar 2008 at 12:10am
I am---------, an aspiring --------- transfer student to George Mason from -------. I have decided to pursue ----------- because of the diversity within the field. There are positions in event management, marketing, facilities, amongst many others making this field even more alluring for me because I have a lot of different interests. I would like to attend George Mason and continue my studies in ------- because I have heard this department is very impressive. I looked at the curriculum and compared it to my current schools and I feel like the classes at George Mason will better prepare me to compete in the job market. I would also like to attend George Mason, because I think it is a better fit for me than -----. -------, being in the heart of DC, is very busy. It is an open campus, and although there is a lot to do, there is also a lot to get into causing my focus to not be on what?s most important; my academics. My freshman year, second semester is a reflection of that. A very close friend of mine who attended ------- passed away during that semester due to the distractions of DC. My grades dramatically fell with her passing, causing a decline in my GPA. Because of my failures, mourning, as well as struggling to get housing due to a shortage, I took a semester off to refocus. That time in my life was very challenging and overwhelming. I was very disappointed in myself because I have always excelled in school, but at the same time this situation was positive because now I know what it feels like to fail and I know I don?t ever want to feel that way again. The next step up from failure is success and that is what I aim to do! I returned to -------- in the spring semester, and my grades in progress now will prove that I am more serious about my academia. However, I am planning to transfer because I feel that I am not getting my money?s worth. After visiting George Mason numerous times, and getting a feel of the campus and its events, as well as reviewing the curriculum for my own major as well as other potential minors, I have realized that I could have the same education, possibly even better, at a school in my price range. I also would like the experience of attending a more diverse university in a suburban city with the city atmosphere not too far away. While away for the fall semester of 2007, I did not let it go to waste. I focused on working to save money for college as well as doing volunteer work with Junior Achievement. Junior Achievement (JA) allowed me to work with middle-school aged children teaching them different aspects in business such as career planning and decision making. It was an excellent experience and I plan on continuing volunteer work with JA because I have a passion to mentor young children. Doing the volunteer work has motivated me to be a better person and role model for not only young children but the people I interact with daily. I know that if I am admitted to George Mason, I will make an outstanding student because I have the drive to be better than I was the day before. Thank You THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS!!!! My situation is that I have a 2.7 which is considered low for admissions for GMU...and is low for me as well. I hope this will help me. I'm thinking about sending in my resume as well as recommendation letter aside from my online application - ANYTHING TO BOOST. Please comment & thanks!!!!! The dashes are just to keep my privacy. Thanks! Yes they asked for a personal statement to learn more about me. I thought that I should explain myself for my low grades so they wouldnt think I was a slacker! Okay thanks...what things should I erase because I think I have your three points but with extra detail.

  49. Resolved Question: Could I get in Trouble for this?
  50. 18 Mar 2008 at 8:36pm
Today is my second day at a new job in mid-managerial position at an academic institution. I met one of my student workers today who commented it was her birthday and I said oh may I ask how old you are (i know I shouldn't have asked but I was trying to be nice and all at a new job), and she just smiled and said 19. Then I smiled and said "to be 19 again." Well the student postions in my department are being eliminated at the end of the fiscal year (a decsion made a year ago by my supervisor). And then today I heard in an unrelated event from months ago a soon to retire employee filed an EEO complaint against someone for Age discrimination. So I've learned my lesson and will not inquire or mention Ages ever again in the workplace. And this wasn't a job interview, so can i get in trouble for asking this student her age? Cathy, It was my 2nd day so I had no idea it was someones birthday, but I will consider the birthday card thing.

  53. Resolved Question: campus parking ticket?
  54. 17 Mar 2008 at 12:34pm
hi i go to a local state college, and the parking department is being very unreasonable. I have purchased a parking pass for $140 at the begining of the semester. One day i had the parking pass on the dashboard rather than the rearview mirror hanger. aparantley the retarded parking attendant didnt see my pass and issued me a ticket. i appealed it and they shut me down (greedy ass holes) for the money. does thier ticket even matter if i dont pay? thier website says i would be on "academic prohibition" and cant sign up for classes my account on the school websites says otherwise. so again do they have any legal authority to make me pay for thier bullshit tickets? and if so who can i appeal my issue to ? Thanks in advance the funny thing sgt.D that they dont know what the hell they are doing, they sent me two tickets in the mail one for not having a pass at all, and the other for having a misplaced pass. I decided since they were stupid enough to do something like that, i have a case with the president and the Vice President of the college. im sending them a letter to show the department's stupidity hopefully they will pardon my ticket. Thanks for all the answers!

  55. Resolved Question: Could someone please help edit my paper?
  56. 15 Mar 2008 at 2:07am
I am an applicant for the Borde Patrol, but I was found unsutable for the job. So I need to respond to a NOPA, and see what happends. My name is xxxx xxxx. I am an applicant for the position of Border Patrol Agent. I am writing in response to a 01MAR08. According to the letter, there is one incident in my teenage history that raised suitability concerns, which is an example of immature misconduct in school. I intend to explain that during the time frame of 2005, I was, like many 17 year olds, a very immature and childish person. I take full responsibility for my lackluster performance during this time frame, and I hope to prove to you that I have long since grown up and become an upstanding asset to society. While attending high school, I made some poor decisions regarding my choice of friends in my third year, which lead to my expulsion and arrest. As a juvenile, I never did realized that associating with the wrong type of crow could involved me in such a predicament in the future, especially to accomplish an ambition and aspiration of joining a law enforcement agency such as the United States Border Patrol. I was immature and unaware of the significant conflict a mediocre action and act of mine, could have, as I matured and took responsibility for my actions. Although I never did ?jump-in? or formally entered the gang, I did associate with the members of the Sureno gang. Please allow me the opportunity to address the following incident: Issue 1: On February 26, 2005, I was arrested by the Fresno Police Department, after a disturbance on campus between the Sureno and Bulldog Gangs. The incident initiated when members of the Bulldog gang began to verbally attack members from the Sureno gang from outside of campus. The group of Surenos and I were gather at a bench that was located in front of campus, when a security guard took notice of the verbal attacks the rival gang made. Carmen, a security guard at Roosevelt High School, approached the group of Surenos and I, and notified the group to calm down and ignored the verbal attacks. She stated that the Fresno Police Department had already been notified that an outside group of Bulldogs was verbally taunting students from the high school. After a couple of minutes, the number of security guards and police officers began to increase. Within the group of Surenos there was an ex-student that had been expelled from Roosevelt High School and was not supposed to be on or near campus. After the group took notice of that event, the ex-student gave me a gold color metal knuckle which I concealed in my left shoe. The ex-student then proceeded to exit the school campus through a back gate located at the southwest of campus. I and two other members of the Sureno Gang followed the ex-student to the back gate. As the group walked to the southwest gate, security guards took notice of the sudden departure and tried to stop the group. The group took notice of this, and sprinted to the gate. Near the gate, the group was approached by a security guard on a golf cart and told us to stop. I and the companions stopped, the ex-student continued and escaped without being capture. After being stopped, Vice Principal Vargas approached the group, questioned and searched the group. After searching the group, he discovered the hidden gold metal knuckle in my left shoe. I do not blame anyone for my immature and lackluster performance that occurred in high school. I understand that I was not obligated to take possession and/or concealed the metal knuckle in my shoe. As I did, I took full responsibility for my actions and accepted the punishment as such. After being arrested and expelled, the juvenile court gave me a misdemeanor and sentence me to a year of probation along with probation school. During year of probation, I had to meet with my Probation Officer Juan Flores each month, not associate or be near gang members, along with other conditions. The year of probation and probation school made a significant difference in my life. Not only was I separated from the bad influences that surrounded me at school, but it also furnished the opportunity to exceed academically and in attendance. Probation school transformed my way of thinking. I was not surrounded by students who wish to exceed academically, but with students who did not careless for their futures. I saw the disrespect the students showed to the teachers, whose only ambition was to help the students exceed in life and academically. I realized that I was not a bad person; I was just heading in the wrong direction. Probation school changed my life. After completing my year of probation and probation school, I enrolled at Reedley Community College. At this community college, I completed two years of education and obtained my Associates of Art degree. In addition, in the year 2006 I was in the Dean?s list for achieving a GPA of more that 3.50. Currently I am attending Fresno State University. With this letter, I will enclose all the documents with which I will try to demonstrate that I have mature and taken action to pursue my dream of joining the United States Border Patrol. The documents that will be enclosed with this letter are: ?Grades from high school. ?Grades from probation school. ?Grades from college and university. The above documents will illustrate a significant difference in maturity from the low academic achievements received in high school to the improvements that I have undergone through. More than three years have past since my arrest. During those years I have continue to help my parents at our family business. And I have not been involve in any criminal activities or associated with any gang members since then. Presently, as stated before, I am currently attending Fresno State University, where I plan to obtain my Bachelor of Science degree in Criminology.

I'd like to teach in an English or Women's Studies department. I'm kind of stuck as to decide which college to attend for Musical Theatre... Here's the stats: ASU Accepts 24 People into Program Recently Auditioned, but don't know for sure if I'm in. Has a BM in Music Theatre (Music Theatre is different from MusicAL Theatre. This means I'll have no classes revolving around that style of dance or singing. I'll practice choral and opera voice style, ballet, jazz, other styles of dance, and classes from the theatre department.) I've gotten a 9,000 per year scholorship on academics alone. More money probobly to come. (They have more to work with) Located in Central Phoenix. U of A: Accepts 12 people into program. I've already been accepted. Has a BFA in Musical Theatre Have given me 2,500 per year on academics alone. Located in Tucson, Arizona aka The Desert. Where should I attend? :(

Feb 24, 2008 The Government Grant System: Inhibitor of Truth and Innovation? By Donald W. Miller, Jr. Ethics in science and society ?describe appropriate behavior according to contemporary standards? (Friedman, 1996). Two standards that scientists follow for writing grant proposals are 1) Keep it safe and survive, and 2) Don?t lie if you don?t have to. Pollack (2005) addresses the first ethic, noting that the paramount motivational factor for scientists today is the competition to survive. A scientist?s most pressing need, which supersedes the scientific pursuit of truth, is to get her grant funded-to pay her salary and that of her staff, to pay department bills, and to obtain academic promotion. The safest way to generate grants is to avoid any dissent from orthodoxy. Grant-review study sections whose members? expertise and status are tied to the prevailing view do not welcome any challenge to it. A scientist who writes a grant proposal that dissents from the ruling paradigm w will be left without a grant. Speaking for his fellow scientists Pollack writes, ?We have evolved into a culture of obedient sycophants, bowing politely to the high priests of orthodoxy.?

I have two offers from the same university, in different departments. Offer 1 is in the School of Medicine, and I will be a administrative associate. I will support the Division Chief, tasks include 50% grant submitting, 30% general office duties, and 20% travel/meeting arrangements. I will be working in an office by myself with the division chief. The office is pretty isolated, very quiet. Offer 2 is at the School of Education, and I will be an Academic Services Specialist. I will be in charge of course scheduling, enrollment reports, event planning (commencement ceremonies, recruitment..ect), and also day to day office support. Here I will be working with many people in an office, the environment is fast paced and loud. Both jobs have similar pay and benefits. I am graduating college in about 3 weeks. As a young college grad that is just starting out, which job would have better potential?

  77. Resolved Question: Marine Infantry transition to civilian life?
  78. 20 Feb 2008 at 2:01pm
I am currently in my second year of college and have always had a strong desire to enlist in the Marines. Originally wanting to enlist straight out of high school, I obtained an academic scholarship to a decent university which my family forced me to take as I hadn't yet turned 18. While I scored a fairly decent ASVAB mark, the idea of MCT instead of Infantry school bothered me. The recruiter told me with the new fiscal year and my score, I could have any job I wanted. Nevertheless, I still would rather pick 0311 over any non combat job. Should I choose enlist or try to earn a commission after college, what is the transition back into civilian life like after an infantry MOS? Most people keep telling me that infantry jobs are best for career Marines. Why are Federal Law Enforcement Agencies and Police Departments not a bigger post military career option?

I did some research on salary.com, and the title I found closest to mine was an Academic Support Coordinator, and the net pay estimate after taxes was $1,379. I wasn't going to ask for this much(but hey it'd be nice), I was going to ask for a 3-4 dollar/hour raise. I've been at my job for over a year. My bosses and co-workers really like; apparently the last couple of people in my position did a horrible job, and I was able to clean up the education department in about a month or 2. I've been told that asking for 14/hr from 10/hr was too much money, considering I'm still a college student and I don't have my degree yet. What do you guys think, how should I handle it when I get called in for my review? I meant to say my bosses and co-workers really like ME. The $1,379 is the biweekly amount I got from salary.com, which is WAY more than what I was planning to ask. My cost of living has increased, but I don't really feel comfortable saying I need the raise for rent. I hear most employers really don't care about personal issues. Oh, my company only has medical benefits(which I dont need because I'm a military dependent), and they don't have dental, vision, or 401k, that kind of stuff.

I went to "http://academic.evergreen.edu/g/grossmaz/interventions.html" on the recommendation of "Tyler"(If you're reading, please respond!)... and with several *very* notable exceptions, it seems to me we're just keeping the majority of third-world and even second-world countries in check. As an actual former state department official told me, "The problem with third-world countries is, they'll have an overthrow of their government... but then the people who started the overthrow don't have any good ideas on how to implement an effective government, so within three to five years another military coup occurs... and the US has to regulate how it happens". That's just how it seems to me... really, Iraq might have been a mistake, but we're currently helping their people rebuild their country as a *democracy*, which I'm all for, and a symbol that yeah, we might have f*cked up by invading them, but at least we'll help them out till the end of this... how many other "invading" countries.... ...do that on a historical level? Some people have equated us to the "new Rome". I beg to differ... Rome had no care for whom they conquered; the fact that we give so much foreign aid to impovershed countries,
