  1. Resolved Question: Need help.. Why can't media ethics be enforced?
  2. 20 Apr 2008 at 8:17pm
I am working on a paper about media ethics and our teacher asks "If ethical codes are designed to promote better conduct from media professionals are unable to be enforced, should we even bother having them?". What I can't seem to understand is how are they not able to be enforced? Just because they can get released before anyone can do anything about it? They still get in trouble don't they?? or just internally to keep reputation? Thank you bryan

  6. 19 Apr 2008 at 8:36pm
I think, atheists, you are crossing a line you really don't want to cross when you attack the Christian moral ethic or code. I think that you will make yourselves look very relativistic indeed. Maybe untrustworthy? No matter how much you demonstrate about christianity over the ages their code stayed the same. Their errors can be pointed out to them. Where is the history of atheism. How do we know what's being done in it's name?

  7. Resolved Question: Are morals and ethics relative ?
  8. 19 Apr 2008 at 8:01pm
Time and again the media call our attention to moral lapses in all areas of society. I suggest that it is because of the rejection of any fixed moral and ethical values. One cause of this confusion is moral relativism, a view that standards vary according to personal preferences. Imagine what would happen if pilots were to navigate, not by fixed reference points, but by beacons that moved about unpredictably. British historian Paul Johnson holds that the philosophy of relativism has helped to ?undermine . . . the highly developed sense of personal responsibility, and of duty towards a settled and objectively true moral code?. So where can we turn for clear, unambiguous laws and principles with which to train our conscience to be a safe guide? Many have found that the Bible perfectly fills that need. From morality to work ethic and from the training of children to the worship of God, the Bible omits nothing important. (2 Timothy 3:16)

  9. Resolved Question: Pit bull breeding?
  10. 19 Apr 2008 at 7:17pm
In the Breeder's Code of Ethics, it's recommended that all potential owners should be chosen and screened before the pups are born (or even conceived). Does anyone have experience doing this? Is it rude to solicit this at dog shows? Does anyone have suggestions in finding QUALITY owners for pit bull puppies? Pup's parents will have done well in shows and have good genetic scores with OFA, CERF, etc...

  11. Resolved Question: Attorney code of ethics?
  12. 19 Apr 2008 at 6:22pm
I retained an attorney for a child custody case, he got me parenting time during my work hours. It took several complaints with the FOC and finally me meeting with my ex's attorney to get the times changed (this was before I had taken paralegal classes). 3 years later I see this attorney at a showcause hearing. Two weeks later I recieve a bill from this attorney saying I owed him $800. I sent a response saying I never recieved any statements of oweing money since the last time I spoke to him. I have never changed address. The following week I get a typed statement from the law office dated 3 years ago for an outstanding balance of $80. I've already recieved the second demand letter from Collections for the amount of $1800. What do you think I should do?

  19. Resolved Question: Should Police Officers be required to be Christians?
  20. 14 Apr 2008 at 3:51pm
This is a nation where morals and ethics are under assault. It's hard to know who should be trusted and who shouldn't. Why not just make sure all the cops are Christians - their moral code would already be in place and most problems should be handled by that. Sure there's always one exception in the crowd, but shouldn't this be a rule?

  24. 12 Apr 2008 at 11:53pm
I mean really ripped a hole in its thin veil of idealism in human nature. Some that explained the need for government, some that stated there always, in some way, a system, a code of ethics that if not stated and in a sense agreed upon would lead to chaos. To all anarchists who will answer, I openly accept your theories and hopes for the future, and I am aware of the many different factions and degrees of anarchy. I am not ridiculing you. Its just that I am writing a report on anti-anarchy and don't need a lecture. I've done enough to get my hopes up, but my position is unchanged. I could of been one of you.

  25. Resolved Question: What would most veterinarians do in this situation?
  26. 12 Apr 2008 at 3:50pm
Say a family brings a dog in and the dog requires an operation that will cost about $500-$750. The family is poor and the dog is otherwise healthy. However, the family will not pay for the operation and the dog will obviously have to be put down. Would a vet be willing to (1) lower the price considerably so the family can afford it, (2) do the operation for free and adopt the dog out to another family, or (3) just put the poor dog to sleep. I'm wondering if vets have a code of ethics that covers situations like this, like doctors and lawyers do. To Bonsylar: I'm a lawyer. And while we certainly charge our clients a lot of money, we are required to do pro bono work.

Which of the following would be the best way to quickly teach yourself the basics of creating a spreadsheet? Use tutorials provided on the internet or on CD. Read the entire software manual. Read an online discussion board None of the above. The majority of workplaces have a published employee code of ethics. True False How would you organize your computer files to show good file management techniques? Save all documents to your desktop. Save all documents to My Documents. Create folders, then save and organize your files into the folders you created. Do not save any files. Instead, print your item and don't save a file. When planning to upgrade a software program on your computer, you should: Read the installation instructions before starting the upgrade. Check whether the upgrade is compatible with your computer. Make sure you have your old software handy in case something goes wrong with the upgrade.

  35. Resolved Question: Could the listing realtor be dishonest?
  36. 9 Apr 2008 at 1:25pm
My fiance and I made an offer on a foreclosed home with our realtor, but he is not the listing agent. Someone else also made a cash offer on this particular house, but they went through the listing realtor. Soon after we faxed our offer to the listing agent, he told our realtor "The offer from my client was cash...etc" as a means of discouraging us from making further offers. Since this other realtor is responsible for sending our offers through to the bank, I have doubts that he even is. I'm sure he wants his clients offer to be accepted because he makes commission from it. I also think it is wrong for the listing agent to have knowledge of the amount of our offer, as he could be telling his clients to bid higher. I know realtors are supposed to abide by a code of ethics, but I'm worried this man is dishonest. What should I do? This is the 3rd foreclosed home we've had interests in and it's not the first time the listing agent has made such comments. Also, we wrote our offer to say that the seller (in this case, the bank) has to let us know if our offer was accepted by noon today. It is now 1:30 and no word from this other realtor. In other words, our contract has now expired and we don't even know if it was reviewed by the bank. We didn't even list any contingencies on the offer, we said we would be willing to take the house AS IS. The asking price was $14,900 and we offered $16,000. Every time we make an offer, we always go above the asking price because we know we are up against cash offers.

i have listened without opinion and please excuse me any time my information is inaccurate but sometimes I am in awe of the lunacy that surrounds me. Most just explain that this is "Just the way it is" regarding the political structure in America. I listen to senators and governors and other persons in power who feel prostitution rings are politically correct for their amusement. These actions it shows basic hypocrisy for the system the Americans have spent years legally organizing. Rules and regulations and ethical codes of conduct are cast aside in lieu of personal social needs. Are these persons sworn into office under oath to uphold the regulation set by the people? Does a breach of contract apply to these persons? As you know the political chaos and ethics of our government can not be tolerated any longer. We must use great logic to change the politicial structure in America. I myself feel great shame when I enter the subway and see child waiting for a shelter to open for comfort Really has an attitude that I can't be sure of ..You need to disclose and bring it to the surface.. open the door of shame...Lets vote responsibly....

  42. 8 Apr 2008 at 10:50am
My query is that i researched the best isa and went into my branch to withdraw money to put it into another bank that was offereing a better isa rate. The clerkess went to speak to someone and i was asked to go into another room where the person advised me to make an appointment to look at their products. she said that the one that i had looked at must have some penalty and that theirs was just as good (however i had looked at theirs and it was not). However i am a bit ignorant about these things and made appointment and did not open account in other bank. My query is - can my bank advise me to open an account with them even if they know theirs is not the best? are they bound by any code of practice not to do this that is not in the interest of the customer?

I've given this task to somewhat ethically decide the best solution for certain questions. Here is the link to the case study : http://www.uvsc.edu/ethics/curriculum/education/case22.html Also, there is an additional question that goes like this: What do you think you should do as a teacher? Utilize all the characteristics of a good teacher as well as the codes of ethics that you have learned. (I think i can figure this out, but if you guys have better recommendations, that will be a great help) p/s: if there any references cited from websites, please provide me the URL as well.. :)

  53. Resolved Question: Is a psychologist allowed to give a 12 year old child to d...
  54. 4 Apr 2008 at 8:06pm
My son's psychologist did, and I was instructed to abide by his recommendation (thankfully I asked for it in writing) and after a week of my son not attending school, I decided I had enough and sent my son back to school. In the meantime, school complained to Child Protection Services regarding child's lack of attendance. Psychologist is now feeling stupid and is making more recommendations (such as placing my son in foster care for 3 months so he won't argue anymore about going to school) which are not beneficial for our family. Did the psychologist break any code of ethics with regards to his recommendation? I want to complain to some governing body regarding this situation. My son has severe ADHD and a sleep disorder, both of which will be addressed at upcoming, long-awaited referral appointments -- April 10, 2008 / June 5, 2008). Thanks I'm trying to find a site which specifies the guidelines for psychologists and tried this site for the first time. The Canadian New Brunswick College of Psychologists doesn't provide any guidelines. This dr. has been following my son for some time; but recent recommendations (in grade 6) have been very odd. There are truancy laws in NB, that is why I sent him back; plus my son's very smart. I told the school why my son was absent and I don't think they believed the psychologist would recommend such a thing, so they complained to CPS and the lady is just following up and she didn't feel a file should be open by her department. The psychologist contacted me for an appointment for my son and I and I think because I have his note in writing (oh yes, he has his phd. -- he is a doctor, but only a psychologist, not a psychiatrist). he's grasping for straws to make our lives difficult. I will not accept it though. Thanks for your comments . . . I'm going to leave it with the lady at CPS to address, as she knows all the details. She's obligated to address the matter so she can address the dr.'s recommendation with him. I didn't agree with his recommendation to begin with; and neither did his homeroom teacher, nor my family dr. and as I search out information; I'm finding out it really is strange for him to have made the recommendation. Again, thank you for your comments.

I believe these cultures and sub-cultutres make unique and lasting contributions - (despite the atrocities perpetrated in their name.) It would be great if you really tried to think of a great thing that a culture (not your own) invented or perfected that now serves us all well - like a system of laws, ethics, pursuit of knowledge -( I'm not reallly talking about labor saving devices and cool gadgets.)

  65. Voting Question: Dental Code of Ethics (Serious Only Please)?
  66. 27 Mar 2008 at 5:42pm
Ok... My dentist knows I have a phobia of people putting their hands in my mouth. (A serious phobia diagnosed by a psych doctor) It says in my chart that I take valium to calm me down for the appointments. Last time I was in, he told me that he would like to try the gas instead of the valium... so today I went to get a couple fillings. He didn't give me the gas because "Your an adult, you won't need it". So as I am completely freaking out in the chair while he is drilling my tooth, he stops and tells me to "Knock it off or I won't treat you anymore. We can't do anything for the pain when it is in your head." After working on my teeth for a few more minutes, he stops and says "I'm going to stop and send you to a shrink if you don't cut it out now." I replied, "I see one already." His attitude changed for the rest of the appt. I am super offended that he made fun of me because it was unprofessional. What do I do and who do I tell?

  81. Resolved Question: Theory on why Atheism leads to more moral behaviour. (See ...
  82. 19 Mar 2008 at 12:53pm
Ethics and morality are simply the innate and learned codes of conduct necessary to function well as part of the society we are in. This is basic behavioural ecology. Behaviour is regulated by a combination of negative and positive emotions that are collectively known as our conscience. When we act within these parameters, we empathise and treat each others helpfully with love and compassion and we fit in well with general human societal needs as well as specifically with the society we are born into. Of course, there are anomalies and conflicts of interest with other traits from time to time but the moral trait is fairly universal (not completely though) and we feel more fulfilled when we prioritise it. Most religious people struggle in an attempt to translate their creed so as not to contravene innate ethics ? indicating a prioritisation of instinctive conscience over religion! So if every good non-religious person follows these instinctive ethics and every good religious person translates their creed in order to follow them the only others who don?t follow these instinctive moral codes are either instinctively bad people, people who make bad decisions or good people who are caused to follow the ethics of the people who wrote the creed rather than their own. Examples of this could include discriminatory beliefs against homosexuals etc. Why not cut out the confusion and just follow what we all know to be right directly? Any disagreements could be approached realistically without the influence of the ancestral Israelites that apparently overrules the opinions of all the living societies. Atheists are LESS LIKELY to be hindered in their ethical pursuit than people who attempt to follow a complex set of religious rules written from the perspectives of different ancestral societies from the Middle East.

  90. 16 Mar 2008 at 1:40am
It seem the US is alot more humane to their POW's than other countries who don't seem to think they have to abide by the Geneva Convention. Is it that they hate other countries so much they have to torture and maim POW's and not give them adequate food or medical attention? Or, is it because that is part of their Code of Ethics to be so cruel to other human-beings such as cutting off POW's heads, torture, lack of medical attention. I watched the movie about Senator McCain and they'd hang POW's on meat hooves and electrocute them and beat them unmercifully. They beat and tortured him and put his head in a crap hole and practically starved the POW's They've even taken American's as hostage and journalist's and have been pretty cruel and inhumane. . Is that humane treatment of human beings even in time of war? I was just wondering. I think this is why American's are so distrustful of people from other countries because of this kind of treatment they've received. Geneva Convention? I guess that goes to prove that the US is always the good guy and has a Higher Code of Ethics. I thought so.
