  7. Resolved Question: global growth vulnerable to market tension ?
  8. 3 Nov 2007 at 5:14am
what effect does this have long term and short ? http://portal.myexcel.com/dynamicportalfiles/newsspotlight.asp?newsid=27260&selection id=5 Despite a flourishing US economy, global momentum remains vulnerable to financial market tension that could dampen critical consumer spending and bedevil the corporate and housing sectors, analysts warn. While the US government on Wednesday reported a surprisingly robust 3.9 percent gain in third quarter US growth, Veronique Riches-Flores, chief economist with the bank Societe Generale, put that in perspective. "The third quarter will be good everywhere, including in the eurozone," she cautioned. She predicted however that "we are in for two to three quarters of negative effects" showing up in the financial results of major banks. Several of them have already disclosed big losses stemming from a collapse in the US high-risk housing market and its impact on mortgage-backed securities. The US Federal Reserve has put the cost of the crisis in the "subprime" mortgage sector at between 100 and 150 billion dollars (69.2 billion-103 billion euros) to banks and credit institutions worldwide. But beyond simple bottom-line losses, "the crisis in the credit market persists, with tighter lending conditions, a weakening in other segments of the economy and a rise in US unemployment," said one banking analyst who asked not to be named. Borrowiong costs among banks are still abnormally high, a sign that jitters continue to sap confidence at financial institutions. As a result, according to Riches-Flores, companies are having trouble securing financing, both in the United States and Europe. A downturn in US housing prices has also signalled an end to the "wealth effect", which in the past few years has enabled homeowners to re-finance their properties in order to obtain ready cash. With that option now disappearing, US consumer spending, which drives US growth, could contract. The US labour market has so far generally resisted the slide in the housing sector, although there have lately been increases in the number of first-time applicants for unemployment compensation. In Europe, "the effects of the subprime crisis are expected to materialise gradually," said Eric Vergnaud, an economist at the BNP Paribas bank. At research group Exane, analyst Jean-Pierre Petit, also noted that "the cost (to Europe) will be progressive" and said there would be no serious damage done if "the equities market rebounds and if the credit market returns to normal." He forecast that the global credit squeeze would shave 0.3 to 0.6 points from the world economy between mid-2007 and mid-2008. The International Monetary Fund last month reduced its growth projection for 2008 to 4.8 percent from 5.2 percent. Petit also cited certain positive effects from the current situation, notably lower US interest rates, a delay in rate hikes in the eurozone and oil prices "that would be even higher without the crisis." In addition, tighter credit conditions had "put an end to the pursuit of speculative bubbles" and could thereby ensure a soft landing for the global growth pace after a five-year spurt.

  9. Resolved Question: Hi, I have a query regarding CFA as a career option.?
  10. 16 Oct 2007 at 5:41pm
Here is brief description of my Profile: Completed Bachelors in Finance, 5 years ago. 5+ years of experience in IT under Financial domain. I have gone through this portal as well as cfainstitute portal. So, I have an idea that a CFA can enter into various areas like Research, Corporate Finance and IT back-end. My queries are as follows: 1. As I am from IT back ground, is it possible to enter into IT back end processing companies after Level I or II? If so, Any list of companies? 2. As none of my experience involves investment decision making, does it make sense to complete 1-2 levels and start accumulating experience for the Charter? I understand passing even 1 level is like trekking the complete Grand Canyon in one go. Thanks to all of you who take time to respond to this and Your responses would be really helpful to me. A frank responses would be really appreciated.

  26. 3 Apr 2007 at 11:40pm
Hi, I'm Tess and I am a Viet Nail tech-not by choice. I became a nail tech to help my mother with opening her own nail salon. And I am here to set some people straight about controversial subjects regarding asian-operated nail salons. 1) Speaking their own language: I've lived here since I was two and speak impeccable English. I speak Vietnamese at the Nail salon 75% of the time. Truthfully, I know it's rude not to speak English, but 99% of the time when I'm speaking Vietnamese it has nothing to do with the customer. I don't think it's rude to speak Viet, cause for God's sake, Asian operated nail salons r cheap, and low class type of salons. If you want high class, go to beauty salons that charge 2x as much! Our salons aren't here to become corporate. They're here for day- to- day survival (I MEAN THAT) 2) Common: Asian people run nail salons because this is their portal away from McD's or the Factory. 3)Tipping : Nail techs dont noe what a retirement saving is. End of Story

TOPIC: ONLINE UNIVERSITY Aug 21 - 28 2006 issue- styudying in Iraq and Uganda doesnt mean having to pass up a diploma from aworld class university anymore. Not when so many are available online. Oxford University, to cite just one example, has offered its master's in international-human-rights law to student working for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in East Timor, or those aiding tsunami survivors in Acheh. Tristram Wyatt director of online learning at Oxford, says that in cyberspace, the "connection can be more profound than a real class. The student are actually in the world's hotspots" Like so much on the Internet, Web classes stumbled after being hailed as the next big thing in the late 1990s. The first movers like the London School?s of Economics? Fathom or NYU Online, failed-losing hundreds of millions of dollars- because students in the West prefer to attend class and parties on a real campus. But online or distance learning is now an established and rapidly growing industry, mainly in Asia and the developing world. Market analysts at IDC predict that the global market that the corporate e-learning will soar from $8 billion last year to $26 billion by 2010. In the United States, 65 percent of graduate school now offer online courses, available to students anywhere in the world. The trend is opening doors for students from small villages in Ethiopia to the back streets of Bangladesh ? where tiny Internet cafes are now the portals to first-rate education. In China, delegates from Western online universities, like Scotland?s Interactive University, can be found in small towns trying to snap up students for whom studying abroad would be too expensive. In Pakistan last month, the government teamed up with one of the world?s largest online education providers, U21 Global, based in Singapore, to launch an ad campaign promoting higher education to rural youth. Besides switching focus to the developing world, online universities are working to make virtual classes more engaging. While early efforts simply posted recorded lectures and lecture notes, courses now offer chat rooms hosted by professors, instant-messenger office hours, flashy PowerPoint-style coursework and lectures formatted for iPods. It?s even becoming fun socially, says Derek Conlon, 42, an IT manager at one of the top investment-banking firms in London, who recently got his diploma from Oxford online: ?It?s not like what I?ve seen on TV with fraternities, but I made friends with people from all around the world. You?re only an e-mail away.?
