  1. Voting Question: Would I be better off choosing graphic design or information...
  2. 7 Apr 2008 at 6:42pm
I get this great thrill out of seeing attractive magazine ads, photos, brochures, pamphlets and web sites and then wanting to learn and acquire the skills to produce them. I also love photography and desktop publishing, and possibly videography. I think I have got too many interests on my plate. But it seems the job prospects are not as good for graphic design, so my second interest became the information technology field, such as computer technician or programming. I think I am both a creative and technical person. But I can't seem to make up my mind. I had already purchased books for Adobe Photoshop CS3 and CSS. I began reading and self-training myself on photoshop and CSS. Should I do graphic design on the side instead? I got a degree in English but desire a career change. I just need to finally come to a decision once and for all.

The cutesite I'm using today, when I try to add eg a Guestbook HTML code... i) Before I ended up with a box in the page, which, when uploaded turned into proper Guestbook so nps ii) Today, I have to copy/paste html cde directly into the page. Will the code turn into a Guestbook once uploaded as before, or will I end up with a big block of html code? Think that about covers my confusion.. sorry to add to yours. I'm working on it during free moments and technology is changing in meantime !

  27. Resolved Question: Is it worth getting my Associates in Science at my Communi...
  28. 7 Mar 2008 at 5:59pm
The way my plan works out, with working full time and going to school part time, the best I can do is to finish my Associates in 4-5 yrs from now. Is it worth even bothering to get it? Will my first courses be outdated by the time I finish? I would also be looking at the same time frame IF I was to go on to get my BA, another 4-5 yrs. Is it even possible to be accepted at a college for a BA if thats my time frame? Will I be able to graduate? How will this look on transcripts for employment? I am currently employed doing desktop publishing with no future and no increase in pay even if I do transfer to another job. I have already maxed out based on my industries standards (and thats WITH an associates or certificate in desktop publishing). Should I just save my money and not bother to go get my associates? I would really be upset if I work at something and in the end I am no better off than If i didnt do it at all. Any thought?s Any other thoughts? Any other thoughts out there??

  29. Resolved Question: I hate my job and want an associates in another field, but...
  30. 7 Mar 2008 at 12:40pm
I'm currently employed doing desktop publishing. I hate doing it, but i know I'm good at it. I'm going to start up college again after a 10 leave. I will be starting basically from scratch. I will be going for my Associates and I estimate that while working, it will take me 4 years to get it. I want to get it in earth science, specifically astronomy, which is offered. I know I would love any job in that field. However, without getting at least a masters in that field, I am unemployable. I already know due to my past college history, I will not be accepted in any other college to get my BA, I'm lucky to be going back at all. I can go for an associates in desktop publishing, which is offered, but I already hate doing what I do. I have already maxed out my pay in this field so a degree will not get me more money. Do I get a Associates in desktop publishing and hate going to school and all my future jobs, or do I get it in astronomy and be unemployable, or not bother at all? The reason I can't go to get my BA is because of grades. I have attempted 40+hrs over a 10 yr period at two colleges and have a 0.017 gpa to show for it. I also received a 1.9 gpa in HS and had to get my GED. I have recently been tested for LD's and found out I have none. I did have a hard and troubled time while I was in HS and college, external issues, which is the reason I took 10 years off to set things right and rebuild myself mentally. I already talked with a counselor at my CC. While they will let me back, she agrees with me a BA will be a tuff shot at best. When all is said and done, even though I may get straight A's, my gpa will still be below 2.0. I can still get my AA at the CC as long as i pass the required classes. Astronomy is my hobby, which is why I would love to work in the field and get a degree in it. I'm just not sure what to do since I can't go on. Do i get something I can't use but love doing or get something in what I hate doing and cant use, or do nothing? Any other thoughts out there? Anyone else? Any other thoughts out there??

I need a job bad and I have delt with temp agencies before but the only thing I dont like about them is that they take out around 3 dollars an hour out of your paycheck. And they do this for about 90 days am I right? So anyways if I went to a temp agency and I was looking for a job in an office, would I be able to get one? I have never had a job in an office, but I have the skills to be able to and learn. I can type very fast, I am good with microsoft office, and I have took several computer courses back in high school, including advanced computer applications, desktop publishing, website design, and typing. Also I have one more question, you already know I need a job but is it even possible for me to get a job in an office? This is the environment I want to work in, my career path and all. I just figured I could get a small office job and work my way up, what do you think?

  40. 4 Mar 2008 at 1:59pm
I am looking to start a small online business from home which includes desktop publishing (invitations, favors, etc) for baby events. 1. What are the key differences between these 2 types of business structure? why would one structure be more recommended over the other? 2. How do you determine if an LLC structure is needed? I have heard that LLC protects your personal assets vs. a sole, but i'm not sure if I need an LLC structure based on my business type.

  41. Resolved Question: Graphic images and business use?
  42. 4 Mar 2008 at 1:44pm
Hi, I'm looking to start a small online business from home in desktop publishing/event planning for special baby related occassions (ie. invitations, favors, etc). I have some questions regarding graphic use and businesses: 1. If I purchase clip art (art explosion, clipart for example) that I then modify using my own illustrator program to then use in my customizable pieces such as an invitation, would this be illegal for business use? 2. Can I use clip art, mass market clip art programs for business use in my pieces such as an invitation? Can I modify these in my own pieces for business use? 3. If I hire/pay a graphic designer to design a few images that I will then use in my labels or invitations to sell, are those images sole property of me and cannot be replicated by the designer or any other designer for other clients? How is this handled?

  53. Resolved Question: Images on my website can only be viewed in Safari.....why!?
  54. 25 Feb 2008 at 9:16pm
I am new to making websites. I am using Dreamweaver 8 on an iBook G4 Mac to make my site. I am simply trying to post a single image as a "preview/coming soon" announcement for the site. I followed the tutorial very closely. I am using Cyberduck as an FTP Client. I started by making an image on photoshop (with a resolution of 72) then I saved it as a JPEG to my desktop. I then inserted that image onto my HTML in Dreamweaver, and saved it to my local files folder. Next, I uploaded it to Cyberduck and published it. The site appears perfect in Safari, but the image won't appear in Firefox, and in Internet Explorer it just shows a little red "x". I have no idea what I'm doing wrong! Please help!

  74. 11 Feb 2008 at 3:08pm
I have to create a newsletter for my company. I've never done any desktop publishing before. I've been looking into Microsoft Publisher and Adobe InDesign. From what I understand Publisher is easier to use especially for a first time user, but InDesign will get you much better results once you get over the learning curve. Any suggestions for either Publisher, InDesign, or anything else will be appreciated. Please include your reasoning with your suggestion. Keep in mind I am computer savvy as I have worked in the IT field before. BTW - This is going to be for a printed newsletter. However, I would like the ability to have them archived on our website as well.

  82. 6 Feb 2008 at 6:06am
I am beginning to create a magazine for Dallas. My home desktop PC will be my office, and I am looking for a user-friendly, budget-friendly desktop publishing software program to create about a 150-175 page magazine. I want it to be easy to place text and images whereever I want, easily and quickly. The most important function is to be able to import pictures taken with my digital camera(s) and place the picture anywhere on the page. I want it to have at least a small variety of fonts. Also, I will not be publishing at home; just producing. I want to be able to save the publication format to disk and take it elsewhere for publishing. Any ideas of a good program that meets these qualifications and gives me the best bang for a decent buck?

  87. Resolved Question: How do I get the first job in Animation?
  88. 29 Jan 2008 at 7:21pm
This isn't a question about what school to go to, I allready have a BFA in Illustration and an MFA in Computer Animation. This is, literally, what does it take/where do I look to get my first ACTUAL job in animation? I've been trying for over a decade now and the closest I've ever come is tracking desktop publishing files. I can't find a job to get experience in the field because everyone seems to only want to hire people who allready have experience. I just completed my Master's 6 month's ago, and it seems that now I can't even get a hole in the wall job to pay the bills because I'm "over qualified". I've been scouring sites like creativeheads, heck even yahoo and careerbuilders daily.. I just can't seem to get a break no matter how many places I submit to. Is there some sort of trick I'm missing? Any advice, please....

Here are the specs: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5450 3072MB DDR2 memory 2 DDR2 slots (total), 0 DDR2 slots (available) Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 with up to 384MB of dynamic video memory 250GB hard drive Other: http://www.gateway.com/retail/notebooks.php These are our familys' needs: some business accounting applications, basic word processing, desktop publishing, and photo editing. Also web browsing and possibly playing games. It also comes with Windows Vista Home Premium, which I've heard is a resource hog and still has a lot of kinks. I'm a little weary of all the negative reviews. In terms of speed, will it be slow? Will we need to upgrade anything in order to play games? Or, should we just return it and go with a mac? I'm technologically challenged, so feel free to talk down to me in your answers. :) Thanks! Thanks for taking the time to reply guys! These are really informative answers. Forrest, what's an over-requirement profile? Is that good or bad? Remember, I?m a bit technologically challenged. Slo_gin007, if Vista becomes too aggravating for me, do you think I would experience any problems downgrading to XP? I?ve read about others having very frustrating experiences during the process. Mamachula, thanks for the tip about Cnet.com! I?ll check that out. I agree that macs are pricey. I've never used one, but everyone who owns one seems to give them glowing reviews. They say they're more stable and secure and that everything "plays nice" together - not as many errors and hunting for drivers. Plus, they do seem to have some really cool software. But, yeah, they're really expensive!

  99. Resolved Question: What kind of software should I be trained in?

I recently changed career focus from administrative work to marketing and design work. My degree is in English writing, but I have a passion for marketing/advertising, desktop publishing, web design, editing and proofreading. I've always been interested in programming too. I'm extremely proficient in computers, am very creative and a fast learner, but I have fallen out of touch with what software packages are popular or in demand by most employers. I am already at expert level with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook). I'm intermediate with Adobe Acrobat and Reader. And I've dabbled in Dreamweaver and Microsoft FrontPage a bit. I want to have the upper hand as far as what software packages I have under my belt. Can you suggest some of the best software programs for me to learn? What is in demand today? Thanks!< >
