  3. Resolved Question: Extracurricular activities: Purposeful, or bogus waste of ...
  4. 16 Feb 2008 at 5:52pm
OK back when I was in grade school/JH/HS, extracurricular activites were all the rage: be they Little League, band practice, instrument lessons, soccer leagues, club meetings, chess matches, etc; but now that I am 27 I look back and see that my former classmates arent exactly all pro MLB players, orchestra virtuosos, symphony conductors, chess champions, and award winning Fortune 500 businessmen/women and politicians, so what was all that fuss about? In my off time I was in Boy Scouts when I was younger and then took afterschool jobs in my teen years, and I think I derived a LOT more from my afterschool experiences than my peers did. To me I didn't want anything to do with extracurriculars, I felt the school already HAD their pound of flesh from me. All I ever did was faithfully attend class every day, earned good grades, did all my assignments and behaved, wasn't that enough for them? In my off hours, I made money, which instilled in me a strong work ethic and good life habits. Mike, thank you SO much for reading my question. I did NOT do extracurriculars, I did 'Scouts because I WANTED to and thought it was cool. I still do. Today you get a gold star for reading comprehension. Bob, I totally agree with that, but does that mean any kid in sports or instrument lessons has 2 parents expecting it will make him or her the next concert virtuoso or the Michael Jordan, or Joe Montana of the future?!

  7. Resolved Question: Do you ever just seem to know something about another person?
  8. 16 Feb 2008 at 4:16pm
I mean WITHOUT judgeing them. It doesn't matter what they look like, their cultural/society position---rich or poor or how they are dressed. Have you just seem to guess or just to know about their integrity, ethics, character or even deeper? Without, or even if other's have told you differn'tly? Have you ever just said nothing about those feelings or insights just to find out that you we're right? I will only accept trueful answers. What is this? How should I deal with this? Why can't I deal with this? What should I do? To Trust or to not Trust? Please read, hear and see this and only respond if YOU can help me. Thank You. THANK YOU.

  9. Resolved Question: Is Black Or White Your Best Motorcycle Personification?
  10. 16 Feb 2008 at 3:58pm
Black has had long run in leather and more recent plastic assisted nylon impact gear. Color derived from shadowed 50 year old street culture with dose of demonized ethic from 'The Wild One'. Blackness concealed stain, was not faceless, and recently adopted helmet electronics from ... ...modern terror, personified by Star Wars, with an evil flat white faceless uniformity relevant to contemporary morality. Question is, would reader trade old midnight promise that neatly framed owners face for DOT Certified flat-white helmet and off-road impact gear copy of Imperial Stormtrooper Bike wear? CB Channel allowing radio communication with like-outfitted troopers would be standard retail feature. As would be plastic impact panels on black stretch nylon net undersuit that slips over biker BDU in XS to XXL sizes. Options include holstered blaster pistol that actually is air horn? How much would reader pay to wear existing Black? How much would reader pay to wear Flat-White?

  11. Resolved Question: Choose Black vs. White Impact Gear Option?
  12. 16 Feb 2008 at 2:34pm
Black has had long run in leather and more recent plastic assisted nylon impact gear. It derives from both asphalt and dark shadowed fifty year old mean street 'cycle culture; with a strong dose of demonized ethic from The Wild One. Blackness concealed stain, wasn't faceless, and recently adopted helmet mounted communications from ... ...modern terror, personified by Star Wars, with evil flat white faceless uniformity more relevant to contemporary morality. Question is, would reader trade former midnight promise that framed owners obvious face for DOT Certified helmet and off-road impact gear copy of Stormtrooper flat white biker wear as seen in recent films? CB Channel would be a standard retail feature allowing owner to communicate with all other outfitted troopers. Plastic armoured impact panels are fixed to one-piece black net coveralls that slip over summer and winter insulated BDU from XS to XXL. Options include holstered blaster that actually is air horn.

  13. Resolved Question: Abortion training for doctors?
  14. 16 Feb 2008 at 1:52pm
I'm writing a paper for an ethics course, and it is a critique of a new NYC law requiring OB-GYN residency programs to make abortion training mandatory for residents, except for those who opt out for moral/religious reasons. The issue here concerns those who are unsure of their position; more residents would be trained in abortions since those who are neither pro-choice or pro-life would be more swayed to undergo training if the program deems it "mandatory." Here are some Pros and Cons that I worked out: Pros: -More availability of doctors trained in abortions so that women are less likely to pursue abortions through back-alley/illegal clinics -Having more doctors trained for abortions will make it easier for doctors to handle urgent situations in which a pregnancy proves life-threatening Con: State is imposing a moral value upon members of the public So what do you think? Should more doctors be trained to perform abortions? Why or why not?

  18. 16 Feb 2008 at 11:55am
Any claims to morality and ethics are nullified the minute we regress to torture as a means to an end. It seems that Bush and Co. would acknowledge this as the self-appointed leaders of the moral majority.

  19. Resolved Question: Vegetarianism - is it really heathier?
  20. 16 Feb 2008 at 10:59am
I am on the verge of becoming a vegetarian for reasons I don't want to say just yet. (The answers to this question may help me decide). My primary question is this: is it actually healthier to eat no meat? I am not oblivious to what?s going on now-a-days. I know about corporate farming and the atrocities that occur there, both to the animals and to our own health through the steroids and other cancer causing unnatural crap they force feed the animals (and us). I am absolutely ready to swear off grocery store meat and fast food meat etc, but what about more natural meat. Like for instance; I have the ability to hunt, naturally fed, wild, ethically killed deer. (This is not an ethics question, please stick to the health side please, I am well aware of my personal morals here). The argument I would use is that other natural creatures of the wild eat meat and seem very healthy to me. My favorite - the bear - is also an omnivore. Cate; What is in the red meat that is bad for you?? I want real answers not conjecture. I am a 270 pound man, with only 10% body fat, thats a lot of muscle that demands protein. I am up to the challenge of finding it elsewhere if someone can proof to me that all meat is bad. Mockingb(ird?): You statictics on healthier vegetarians are flawed, becasue the meat eaters you compare to are not eating only "natural meat" but rather mostly "commercial meat" laced with crap. I could point you to native tribes that still only eat natural food, including meat that have NO heart disease or obesity. LAST EDIT: Seems like no one can offer proof against; adding some natural meat to your diet is healthier. I think this is the case anyway. It makes sense, we have sharp teeth and flat teeth like omnivores, I think we have the ensymes to handle some meat. All of the arguments are either for animal rights (which I agree with) or against commercial meat (due to additives or anminal rights again), which everyone should know is BAD for both reasons

  23. Resolved Question: Help! I have no idea what to do with my life!?
  24. 16 Feb 2008 at 9:54am
I've actually had a mental breakdown over it! I don't know what university to go to or what to study, the whole idea of it even terrifies me as the idea of being alone in a big strange city is horrible! For my GCSEs I got 1A*, 3As and 4Bs and at the moment I'm taking: English Language History Psychology Philosophy & Ethics I don't even know which one to drop this year. I don't have a particular flair for any of them to be honest! I just have no idea what to do and my friends can't help me as they're sorted and doing different subjects anyway. I've looked on UCAS and did the test thing to no avail. Please help?! Those subjects I listed are AS levels by the way

  25. Resolved Question: Whats required to enter heaven, and MORE importantly WHY?
  26. 16 Feb 2008 at 9:49am
I could be going to heaven if all that you needed were morals and ethics and to be a good person. Lets me tell you for a moment that I do not believe in sex before marriage, I do not drink alcohol, I believe in being just and kind, not gossiping, I believe in doing good things, loving thy neighbour, not judging people, BUT WAIT despite the fact I believe in all the standards set out in the bible I NEED MORE, I need to worship and believe in Jesus. Why do we need to accept that he was crucified and died for our sins and need to worship him? What kind of God needs to be worshiped to accept you in to his pearly gates? An un-just and un-moral, un-ethical god who cannot see good and bad people for what they are?

  27. Voting Question: What object will effectively demonstrate what's ethical and ...
  28. 16 Feb 2008 at 9:10am
Hi there. I will report about the do's and don'ts (ethics-wise) when students research about a company/corporation. Aside from the PowerPoint slides, what object, when shown in class, will effectively (creatively also) facilitate the discussion? THANKS!! It seems my question is vague so.., A student who reports about proper waste disposal can bring a small container of soil particles which will be passed around in the room. There, each of his classmate can put tiny pieces of paper. At the end of the report, he will have shown them the reality that, even though a person only litters a piece of paper, things get worse when wastes pile up. Well, I need an object that will effectively do something like that in my topic.

  36. 16 Feb 2008 at 4:42am
I have been able to go through high school and university with minimal study, but now that I am doing an honours year, I will need some sort of work ethic. I 'm big on reading and tend to get caught up with that when i ought to be studying. How can i break this cycle??

  37. Resolved Question: Failing classes?
  38. 16 Feb 2008 at 4:37am
I've never gotten anything lower than an 83% on my report cards since the beginning of my high school career. and the lowest grade I've ever gotten was a 78% in 8th grade... I've never understood how people can fail classes. it just doesn't make sense to me. I was talking to one of my teachers yesterday and we were talking about how our alternative school was actually giving out high school diplomas instead of GEDs now! I can't believe it! I work my butt off to get good grades in school and to get my diploma while these other students who choose to party and stuff, take a class for a few weeks at the most and get the same credit that I received over 3 months! I just want to know what happened to motivating students to get them to do their best? It seems to me that so many students at my school just lack the work ethic that was implanted in my brain. I?m not looking down on students who choose the easy way out of high school, but I just can?t help but wonder what?s going to happen to them after high school. You can?t take short cuts in the real world? I guess I kinda want other teen's views on this stuff and views from the teens who do fail classes and go to alternative school...

  39. Resolved Question: Have unions destroyed the American work ethic?
  40. 16 Feb 2008 at 4:05am
I'm a manager at a restaurant. It's amazing to see how many poor people have a horrible attitude to work. The best workers to find are usually middle-class kids from middle-class high schools, usually white. I'm not being racist, but so many poor people, whites included, have HORRIBLE work ethics. The ones who have parents who are union workers are pretty lazy and bad. I agree with what unions stand for, but I don't agree with them promoting laziness and abuse. I can't understand why people can't be grateful for having a job, instead of complaining about having to actually show up for work. The biggest whiners are poor people and union workers. After working as a manager for a while, it's embarrassing for me to agree with corporate CEOs who ship factories and jobs overseas!

  43. Resolved Question: Will a florist tell someone who sent them flowers?
  44. 15 Feb 2008 at 11:30pm
My friend received a dozen roses from a secret admirer for Valentine's Day. She has no idea who they are from, however she works as a health professional and is concerned that it they may be from an unstable patient. She is wondering if the flower shop who delivered them will disclose the senders name or any other type of information. Is there some sort of florist code of ethics here? She is concerned for her safety as am I. Thanks.

  45. Resolved Question: Ethics question: Is confidentiality still breached if name...
  46. 15 Feb 2008 at 11:24pm
After work, I like to blow off steam by going out and telling people about my day, sometimes loudly. For example, someone came into the office recently who was quite rude. I was venting to a friend in a nearby cafe, to the effect of 'This guy came who came in today was nuts. He said ________ to my boss and _______." Now, everything said in the office is supposed to be confidential, but it's not a Secret Service job or anything. Basically, I am wondering if venting to people who don't work in the office without using names is something I could be reported for, if someone were to overhear. Using first names might not be acceptable, and I can see how using a full name wouldn't be, but is it okay otherwise?

  48. 15 Feb 2008 at 10:38pm
By earn it I mean Showing your passion for the business Showing a great work ethic Getting the crowd into it. etc etc etc I would want to earn it. Let my following accept me as a hard devoted worker to the business. Whether I am booed or cheered, I know I got over and that would help the prestige of the belt.

  60. 15 Feb 2008 at 6:27pm
I know the environment of the Business Department in college is different from the real business world, but I've sensed that most of the Business students are ostentatious and greedy. I wonder what the business professionals are really like. I wanted to become a business woman because I wanted to be wealthy. I was born into a modest-income family, and I've never lived a wealthy life. But since I got a sense of the business game, I don't feel it's right for me. I'd rather be a good person with good ethics and morals than a wealthy CEO with poor ethics. Am I right in assuming that the business world is full of dirty tricks and ethical dilemmas? I'm a college freshman, and I don't have much experience in the real business world. I'd appreciate it very much if you'd like to share your experience with me. Thank you very much!

NORTH AMERICAN COMMITTEE FINALISTS VICTOR BUBAS - Contributor (Finalist in 2003), the 1996 recipient of the prestigious John Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award, began a lifelong love affair with basketball in his hometown of Gary, Indiana before attending North Carolina State University where he played for, and coached alongside, Hall of Famer Everett Case. As a player, Bubas helped NC State reach the NCAA Final Four in 1950. His strong work ethic and vision helped put Duke on the national map in basketball and made Bubas the second winningest coach in the 1960s behind Hall of Famer John Wooden. As the Commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference from 1976-1990, Bubas played a key role in the NCAA's adoption of the both the three-point line and the 45-second shot clock. ADRIAN DANTLEY - Player (Finalist in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007), a native of Washington, D.C., was one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history. He had a stellar 15-year NBA career with seven different teams (Buffalo Braves, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers, Utah Jazz, Detroit Pistons, Dallas Maverick and Milwaukee Bucks), the majority of the time spent with the Jazz (1979-86). At all levels, Dantley enjoyed success - as a scholastic All-America player at DeMatha Catholic High School (Md.), as a collegian at Notre Dame (1973-76), as the leading scorer (19.3 ppg) of the gold medal 1976 Olympic team and as a professional where he was Rookie of the Year in 1977. His 23,177 career points still ranks 23rd all-time in the NBA. He scored 2,223 points in three seasons (25.8) at Notre Dame, ranks second in Irish career scoring and was a unanimous First Team All-America list in 1975 and 1976. In all but four seasons as a professional, Dantley averaged 20 points or better, including topping the 30-point mark four straight years (1981-84). The six-time NBA All-Star (1980-82, 1984-86) was named NBA Comeback Player of the Year in 1984, the year he led the league in scoring (30.6). WILLIAM (Bill) DAVIDSON - Contributor (Finalist in 2007), 85, is a lifelong Michigan resident born in Detroit, where he has created both NBA and WNBA dynasties. An owner of the Pistons since 1974 and the WNBA Shock since 1998, Davidson's Pistons have captured three NBA crowns to go along with two WNBA titles for the Shock. Davidson has served as Chairman of the NBA Board of Governors, and has been an innovative business leader in the sports industry - building the revolutionary Palace of Auburn Hills, playing an integral role in structuring modern NBA salary cap and free agency standards, and even owning the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning and capturing a Stanley Cup. His Pistons have featured several Hall of Famers, including Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Chuck Daly and Larry Brown. A member of three NBA championship teams, Johnson led the Seattle Supersonics to the 1979 NBA title and was named Finals Most Valuable Player. He was an unheralded player coming out of high school and college, but left his mark on the NBA as a five-time All Star (1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1985) and one of the game's great clutch performers. Nelson is one of the modern game's great innovators with his small-ball offense, his eye for international talent and his ability to reinvent preconceived notions about positions on the basketball court. He led the Golden State Warriors to a 4-2 game upset of the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the 2007 NBA Playoffs, the first time a #8 seed defeated a #1 seed in a seven-game series. In 1996, Nelson was named to the NBA's Ten Best Coaches of All-Time list and has served his country as the head coach of the 1994 U.S. men's national team that won the gold medal at the World Championships. HAKEEM OLAJUWON - Player, a native of Lagos, Nigeria, spent the lion's share of his basketball career in Houston, Texas where he led the Houston Rockets to back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995 and the University of Houston to three consecutive Final Four appearances from 1982 to 1984. 73. Voting Question: Solution to the prison crisis?
  74. 15 Feb 2008 at 1:29pm
Doesn't this seem like a simple solution to the prison crisis in this country When you go to prison there should be a whole society structure. You start off at the bottom with basic rations and very mundane physically challenging taks to carry out and simple basic living conditions. You should be given the oportunity to work in the prison producing products of use to people on the outside world. If you are good at your job, learn new skills and behave, your living conditions within the prison should improve. This seems obvious to me, you will learn new skills you can put to use on the outside, learn to become a responsible member of a society structure and learn the value of things and a hard work ethic. This type of humane work house would surely be better than just leaving them to rot the way we do at the moment. Don't be an idiot and say something pathetic 'like they should all be shot'' or ''they should know right from wrong'' The reality is that many prisoners are a product of their upbringing, i.e not their own fault. Someone whoese mum was a drug addict, got no education got bummed by his dad and has a learning disability did not turn around one day and say, 'right now i'm going to leave my perfect life and choose to make the conscious well imformed desicion to become a criminal'' They just are a f*cking criminal because thats just what they got dealt. Now prison should be a tough structured workhouse environment that teaches them how to be a normal person, who works hard at an honest job, like a miltary boot camp.

  79. Resolved Question: Vegetarians Vegans - Help me with this problem.?
  80. 15 Feb 2008 at 9:33am
Hi there, the moment I say I am a vegetarian or I am born vegetarian, people attack me or are sarcastic about it. It is not even like I participate in a meat vs veggie discussion! I've noticed this especially at work. It comes up when someone serves me meat and I politely decline saying I am a vegetarian. I had just one colleague who was compassionate in many ways. She was not a vegetarian but defended me sincerely for what I was, when I was attacked. I dont even know how to handle this, especially when I am minding my business and not even preaching anything. I am sick and tired of "Oh u vegetarians do this" "oh u vegetarians do that" "you vegetarians are athists" "you vegetarians are dumb" "You vegetarians are abortionists".......when all what I have in my head is "I dont want to eat meat!" Give me some good points to defend myself and to help them understand work ethics! Good Point BlueSea. I'll keep that in mind. The point is I may be talking abt me to someone who probably who is curious abt my preferences. They may not be the people who attack. But those others sharing a lunch table for example, to whom this answer was not directed, start attacking me. I get what you are saying though. The reason why I say I am a vegetarian is because I've said "No thanks" several times to a friend, and the friend thought I hated her cooking :). I had to explain I was a vegetarian then so that she didn't feel offended. After that I thought it was best to say I was a vegetarian.

  81. Resolved Question: for those of you who think Obama has accomplish nothing?
  82. 15 Feb 2008 at 12:58am
Obama passed legislation with Republican Senator Jim Talent to give gas stations a tax credit for installing E85 ethanol refueling pumps. The tax credit covers 30 percent of the costs of switching one or more traditional petroleum pumps to E85, which is an 85 percent ethanol/15 percent gasoline blend. -After a number of inmates on death row were found innocent, Senator Obama worked with law enforcement officials to require the videotaping of interrogations and confessions in all capital cases. -His first law was passed with Republican Tom Coburn, a measure to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent. -Obama created the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income working families in 2000 and successfully sponsored a measure to make the credit permanent in 2003. The law offered about $105 million in tax relief over three years. -Obama joined forces with former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon (D-IL) to pass the toughest campaign finance law in Illinois history. The legislation banned the personal use of campaign money by Illinois legislators and banned gifts from lobbyists. Before the law was passed, one organization ranked Illinois worst among 50 states for its campaign finance regulations. -As a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Senator Obama has fought to help Illinois veterans get the disability pay they were promised, while working to prepare the VA for the return of the thousands of veterans who will need care after Iraq and Afghanistan. -He traveled to Russia with Republican Dick Lugar to begin a new generation of non-proliferation efforts designed to find and secure deadly weapons around the world. -Obama has been a leading advocate for protecting the right to vote, helping to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act and leading the opposition against discriminatory barriers to voting. - In the U.S. Senate, Obama introduced the STOP FRAUD Act to increase penalties for mortgage fraud and provide more protections for low-income homebuyers, well before the current subprime crisis began. -Obama sponsored legislation to combat predatory payday loans, and he also was credited with lobbied the state to more closely regulate some of the most egregious predatory lending practices. -Barack Obama introduced the Patriot Employer Act of 2007 to provide a tax credit to companies that maintain or increase the number of full-time workers in America relative to those outside the US; maintain their corporate headquarters in America; pay decent wages; prepare workers for retirement; provide health insurance; and support employees who serve in the military. -Obama worked to pass a number of laws in Illinois and Washington to improve the health of women. His accomplishments include creating a task force on cervical cancer, providing greater access to breast and cervical cancer screenings, and helping improve prenatal and premature birth services. -Obama has introduced and helped pass bipartisan legislation to limit the abuse of no-bid federal contracts. -Obama and Senator Feingold (D-WI) took on both parties and proposed ethics legislation that was described as the "gold standard" for reform. It was because of their leadership that ending subsidized corporate jet travel, mandating disclosure of lobbyists' bundling of contributions, and enacting strong new restrictions of lobbyist-sponsored trips became part of the final ethics bill that was signed into law. I really could list many, many more but I fear it would be too much to take in at one time. I hope this helps some of you know him a little better. Everyone seems to be jumping on his "Change" bandwagon. However, he does have the record to back it up. haha..i know jonathan..just spreading the message..u know

  83. Resolved Question: What to do when you have sex with a guy you dont know well...
  84. 14 Feb 2008 at 11:32pm
This is a sex ethics question. There is this boy in my school I have known for a while now but never really got too personal with him because my friend liked him. I went out drinking with him and everybody else from school and got to know him better. We danced all night and had what seemed "interesting" conversations. He invited me to sleep over and we had sex. The sex was good, he was very nice and attentive, we cuddled. When I saw him in school we smiled at each other and then I did not look at him anymore and he did the same. What I wonder is if that was rude for me to do, and what is the correct way to act after having sex with a guy you have to see again and again but before you had sex you did not really know him. Should things go back to normal, or should I smile at him and start conversations since I've already seen his penis?

  87. Resolved Question: Bond,James Bond...?
  88. 14 Feb 2008 at 10:12pm
I think this type of man would be exciting to date. Do you think a long term relationship could work with this sort of man? The description from Jennifer Bawden's book follows: "Bond,James Bond -- This man likes his martini and his life shaken -- not stirred. Not easily led, he makes his own path. He's powerful, secretive, strong, confident, bold, opinionated, adventurous, rebellious, expressive and proud of his individuality. Undercover (or under the covers) he's seductive, mysterious, assertive and irresitiable. He's not afraid to speak his mind and enjoys playing devil's advocate. He's got all the lastest gadgets and works best alone. Governed by a strong code of ethics, he'll quickly and wisely assess all the facts and swiftly execute his decision. Add olives; only serves one." SP: Not the actual Bond. It's a tag given to a certain set of personality traits. Valid point SP Rebirth: Why are you picking on my song of the day questions? Are you the one who reported them? *looks hurt* Rebirth: Good, I was feeling rather hurt thinking you reported me. As I said in my posts today the song of the day had actually neared it's end anyway....so you need not worry. RB: Knowing you, you'll lose your account before best answer is picked. Awww OK Lioness

  90. 14 Feb 2008 at 10:01pm
so a person believes that whatever sin he/she has done are already forgiven, and that's simply because Jesus died for their sins. so now i can steal, lie, hurt someone, and commit adultly ..etc and i know that my sins are forgiven. so can i assume that you can do anything against me and not worry about sinning, because come on! your sins already been forgiven, otherwise, what's the point of Jesus death? so is the only reason why you can't hurt someone or do a crime is because you fear the government Law more than you fear God? or your nature human ethics tells you not to do so. and no i am not an atheist, i am a believer of God (God is not Jesus, but He is the one who sent Jesus to you)

when you compare the way each ran their campaigns for the presidency against their chief competitors? In other words...how would you compare the kind of campaign Obama has run thus far say against Hillary Clinton to the campaign Bush ran against John McCain in 2000 and how would you make the case of that being a predictor of the type of ethics they would have as president?
