  3. Resolved Question: Win32/Virut. Anyway to heal files instead of removing them?
  4. 21 Apr 2008 at 2:09am
Okay ~ So a friend of mine sends over Daemon Tools via e-mail. Nifty little program that lets you mount ISO files onto a virtual drive. Problem is, the crypatapi.dll file that makes Daemon do what it does, had Win32/Virut (a nasty polymorphic extort virus) embedded into it. This little bugger patches winlogon.exe (bypassing windows firewall) and explorer.exe (allowing it to write code to the processes running, random EXE and SCR files, and the RAM). It also infects your System Restore. I had just installed Windows from a fresh format (so I hadnt' installed any Anti-Virus apps yet) and had to format again. First thing I installed was AVG Anti-Virus & Spyware. It found 63 infections on my backup drive ALL *Virut* infections. Need to know how to heal with AVG and not Delete these files. I have a CSV file I can send to you should you want to look over the details. Nevermind, since I have the CSV, I will delete the files and re-download them clean. Thanks though.

  5. Resolved Question: how can I get all of my files back on my computer?
  6. 21 Apr 2008 at 1:28am
So my laptop crashed on me a couple of weeks ago and I went to my computer help desk. They fixed it so it could start up again but all of my files have been deleted. I think the computer must have rebooted itself and tried to restart the whole system. I spoke with the manager of the help desk but they said that they couldn't fix it and I would have to go to the computer store to get it fixed. What's wrong with my laptop? Any computer gurus out there b/c I need help please. I think something is either wrong with my hardware or my software. Please help.

  14. 20 Apr 2008 at 11:18pm
Also defrag and system restore won't work, Norton gets half-way through uninstall and quits, and my display settings keep going back to 8 Bit. Obviously I am without Antivirus software now and since yesterday I can't even get Norton Chat online again because it says I need at least IE5...I have IE7!! Is this some massive virus or am I missing something? I do not have the Windows OS disc(s) but I have the Dell discs only!? Thank you for the info though (sfc /scannow) as I tried to go into cmd and follow the previous directions, but I do not speak Doss and it kept refusing the prompt! Maybe a space or something that fouled it up? I hope the gentleman with the advice will also see this post, and thanks again...I'm sort of a "newbie". Wait...these Dell discs say Windows XP Home OS reinstallation CD..wellallrightythen!! Thanks, I'll give it another try, and thanks again!! Ran cmd prompt and inserted disc but Dell says number codes are wrong! Emailed them for confirmation and tried to download spybot.com but get error code 1019, not enough required space in a Registry Log. I have found that this Sys-32 is a quickly mutating spyware (?) and a long cmd list of chasing it down but it's clearly seriously advanced looking! Between Norton and Dell the silence is deafening-hoping to hear from then soon but YOUR treatment would have worked if my OS Disc numbers were correct! Thanks again. Ron.

  15. Resolved Question: Mac - No network/"Battery Unvailable"/Deleted a file? Urge...
  16. 20 Apr 2008 at 11:03pm
I think I might've delted a file that allows my Powerbook G4 to get online. The network will not connect and it says "Battery Unavailable" at the top with a big "X" next to the battery. Energy pane in the system preferences only shows the bottom half of the page and when I go to the network pane nothing shows up. I think I might've accidently deleted either a com. file or another file. Any ideas? I'm on a temporary computer at a computer lab. Thanks for the help. I'm using Mac OS X Panther on a 12 inch Powerbook G4. I will keep updating if more information is needed. Its not for the computer at the computer lab. Its for my laptop. Battery has nothing to do with it. Connected to the adapter. The network utilities won't help and yes I did trash the file.

  21. Voting Question: Database usernames and passwords available in plain text?
  22. 20 Apr 2008 at 8:15pm
In an open systems environment (i.e. Unix and Windows) I am finding that many applications store their database ID usernames and passwords in plain text somewhere on the server - registry, web server, scripts, config files, etc. Typcally, these accounts have a high level of DML privilage on the database which allows the application to fully run and interact with the database. I am concerned that users other than DBA's will have access to view this database authentication info. Encryption breaks my applications, so how do I detect misuse of these database accounts? i.e. - usage by humans, not the daily application activity.

  23. Resolved Question: What kind of job am I fit for with these qualifications? I...
  24. 20 Apr 2008 at 7:50pm
Ok, so I have to move out of my house in a month (I am getting kicked out b/c of my parent divorce.) I am 18 years old, and ending my junior year in high school. I am trying to see if I can finish up my high school credits in a community college, and earn my 2 year there so that I can get a degree and a decent job until I am able to further my education. So, I haven't gotten my high school degree quite yet. I worked in a steak and shake for 6 months when i was 15. I worked in a Chick-fil-a for a year at 15-16. I spent two summers (when I was 16, and 17) working as a medical assistant in a doctor's office. I worked with basic computer systems, interacted with patients, filed paperwork, and created medical charts. What kind of job can I get now? I need it to pay decently- enough to pay for a car, gas, insurance, a small apartment, and basic living expenses. I plan on taking out a few loans, but I cannot get myself into deep debt. Please give me some advice if you can! By the way I have good grades in school (a 3.7 gpa) and I am active in my school's community. I am in 3 clubs, and play varsity soccer. I know a lot of employers look at things like that, and it will help me to get financial aid if I have to go to community college soon.

  25. Voting Question: How do I organize my filing system?
  26. 20 Apr 2008 at 7:20pm
I don't have one yet...but I want to make one. I don't know exactly what I need to save and what I don't need as far as paperwork goes. Here are the things I do that I think I may need to save some paperwork on: I'm a college student. I receive federal loans to pay for school. I have a car. I work part time. I have a few bills in my name like cell phone, car insurance which is automatically deducted from my bank account, health insurance and one credit card (the rest are in my roommate's so even though I pay half of them I don't have bills for them). My bank account statements both come online but sometimes I receive correspondance from the bank. I don't know how much or how often I need to save some of these things or what kind of a file system to set up. Any help would be appreciated.

  33. Resolved Question: What genealogical filing system do you use/recommend?
  34. 20 Apr 2008 at 5:33pm
I want to give each of my relatives an I.D.# for filing and organizing hard copies of their data and cross-referencing, but I haven't found a ready made organization system I like. Ahnentafel is fine for ancestors but hard to use for steps/siblings/half-siblings, etc., though I do use a modification I've made called "Marital Ahnentafel" with a sort of decimal/letters type classification system (based on the SuDocs call numbers for government docs if you're familiar) that works pretty well, but before I adapt that I'm curious if there's a better one already out there. Thanks for any suggestions.

  41. Resolved Question: Can CCleaner corrupt the system/32 file?
  42. 20 Apr 2008 at 2:37pm
I'm asking this because I had ran the registry cleaner using CCleaner and the next day my computer did not start saying: /windows/system32/config/system windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: /windows/system32/config/system you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup cd rom, select r at the first screen to start repair press 'r' I fixed the problem by doing what it said, but now certain programs dont work. I used to love CCleaner as I felt that it really helped my computer a lot, but now I'm afraid to use it at all. So, can CCleaner corrupt the registry?

  47. Resolved Question: Driver level I/O access to hard drives???
  48. 20 Apr 2008 at 1:53pm
Anyone here who knows how the lowest level I/O works to read/write sectors(?) on hard drives these day? some 15 years ago I created a file system and back then If I wanted to I had complete control of every bit on the the hard drive including the bad sector map. I am interested if someone accused of murder today (Hans Reiser who created the ReiserFS (files system for linux) can go and manupulate the drives to change dates etc and the trace of activity that the forensic PC expert looked at for a whole day (he said he looked at only about 30% of the storage media)... and he found the trace of disk back-up taking place starting at 2:30 PM and then computer games being played after 1.5 hrs later for how long I don't know. But this supposedly created an "alibi" for Hans Reiser that he was at the house during the time that his missing wife was supposedly driving away from his house. Pleasde answer only if you know what I am asking for and know how disk I/O is done.

  50. 20 Apr 2008 at 1:44pm
i cleaned up the viruses and changed the ready boost property as it was to speeden the system speed. i changed the memory allocated to it to max(3880mb). it is a 4 gb pen drive. this action caused this readboost application file which was nearly 3.5 gb. i tried hard to delete it. bt error-no permisiion. i din know exactly how to change permission. so i gave the option not use this device, this option was on the top of this memory allocation thing. what is this all about and what should be the setting. is that all right if i've given this option and use this device??

  53. Voting Question: Hard disk Problem Possible.... Important Files inside?
  54. 20 Apr 2008 at 12:50pm
Hi, my computer suddenly stopped working during the middle of a virus scan (which never happended before) so I restarted the computer and found out that the OS system was not booting up at all! So i figure I go to safe mode to see what the problem was, and couldn't because it was too slow when it ran the bios. After 30 minutes of waiting, it finally booted up to safe mode and I tried scanning, however and error came up 2 hours later (scan was not finished) saying that Windows Vista had an extreme error. When it first booted up again, I noticed a clicking sound either from my CPU fan or my hard drive. So I took the hard drive out and put it on a flash surface, and it seems that the hard drive was causing the noise! I couldn't believe of how a 5 month hard drive could go bad after a short period of time. Please help! (Cannot run OS system/too slow) Forgot to add one more thing. The hard drive was not installed until 5 months ago, however the seagate hard drive was bought possibly over a year ago.

  55. Resolved Question: EEOC case, wk comp, support groups, future advice.?
  56. 20 Apr 2008 at 11:41am
EEOC case, work comp system, dis. eligibility, support groups. How to live? Bless all those who've been thru these systems-work comp and reporting discrimination. Both a sham of a process. I'll try to be brief. Info as to what happens next in the process? Any support groups you know of-online is good. Info on what my future options are, are greatly appreciated. I was injured at work 14 yrs ago due to faulty equipment-kept working full-time. Continually attended PT, usually on my own time. Had to use wk comp PT and Drs only. I became a supervisor and had excellent eval's. Am a single parent. New boss' took over our co. and began to rid it of all but the loafers; they had a personal agenda. 3 since been fired. I was continually transferred to physically demanding work areas despite my requests and Dr's orders to stay in my current capacity; I was reinjured twice. This led to retaliation by the boss toward me. I just wanted to stay at work and stay off of their 'target' list. I filed a complaint; it was ignored. Filed an EEOC complaint. Investigator brushed * 13 minutes ago * - 3 days left to answer. Additional Details 6 minutes ago me off; ended up yelling at me. She was far passed the legal time limit; from her comments she'd never read the case. I almost gave up; had a nervous breakdown. I could not work; was in chronic pain, getting less than 1/3 my income, can't care for myself or my child. Still being retaliated against. I filed a complaint with EEOC. Now had a 'real' investigator listening. Took 4yrs to get him and info together. EEOC found strongly in my favor; sent a strong letter to my employer for conciliation. Laws were broken. My employer said since I got work comp benefits, they were done with it. Never knew I needed accommodations. (It is in my file there) EEOC could file suit on my behalf, but only for back pay. I work for the 'state' who passed a law that no one can sue them! EEOC instead referred the case to the Dept of Justice. DOJ says they do not have enough workers to file suit in every case; only VERY few. Could the police say, well you broke the law but we don't have DA's or jail 0 seconds ago space, so you go free? THANIKS TO ANYONE STILL HANGING IN THERE AND READING! Now I can 'sue' on my own. I have to prove that they worsened my condition. I meet with an atty for first time Monday. I'm cynical for good reason; PT helps little, is a 2hr drive ea. way to a specialist twice a week who once again, looks down on wk cp patients. What happens next with filing suit against a state entity? My mental issues are as bad or worse than my physical ones. I am overwhelmed merely with everyday life. I have intermittant clarity and strength. Since I worked for the state and we do not pay SS tax ( I did for 15yrs prior) I don't think I qualify for SS Dis., or any assistance. I'm 45. My future looks bleak to me. The 'system' aids those very young, and those very old (not enough) but if you're in the middle, you're screwed it seems. I hate being on wk cp-5 yrs now; humiliating. Dr said if my condition had been treated properly to begin with it would be better-perm. damage is done. Help

  66. 20 Apr 2008 at 9:21am
Hi, a few weeks ago I downloaded this one online game called Mabinogi. But earlier yesterday I was deleting a bunch of unused files from my computer and when I tried to play again it didn't let me. I uninstalled the actual game and then tried to download it again but it says "The path to Mabinogi is invalid" and it stops right before it's done installing. This happens when I do it automatically and manually. This is the system requirements are listed on this page: http://mabinogi.nexon.net/Downloads/Client.aspx I have DirectX 9.0c but when I try to install Nvidia and Ati it doesn't work. So I think the problem is I have to get those on my computer but it wont let me install! What do I do?

  69. Voting Question: Has any1 got the complete Civilization III game and send it ...
  70. 20 Apr 2008 at 6:09am
I have got the civilization III conquests & the original game downloaded from the net. Unfortunately, it states that it requires a CD of civilization III before it starts. For the civilization conquests game it states that it couldn?t find the Civilization III: play the world game whereas I have already downloaded whatever I could. There is one more problem that I have built a scenario of my own on edit scenario feature but when I had the civilization III game earlier (I had borrowed it from someone and loaded it but somebody accidentally deleted it from my system) I couldn?t choose the starting location of the player. Now, the civilization which I have downloaded has a player starting option but I?m not sure that it would function as I wanted. Hence, could anyone please send me the Civilization where I can choose the starting location of the player? I?m in New Delhi, India & if you can give it to me by hand if you stay there. In return, I can give music and/or movie files etc. Thanks.

  71. Resolved Question: Upgrading laptop RAM?
  72. 20 Apr 2008 at 5:48am
Hi I have an Ei System 3086 laptop and it came with 2 slots of 256MB memory as standard with the laptop. Having managed to install Windows Vista Ultimate recently on this laptop, obviously it would be better if I could upgrade the memory, as I can run the OS, but it crashes quite regularly. The plan is that I want to replace both 256MB slots with 1GB modules (from this website if your interested: http://www.aememory.co.uk/Ei-system-3086... I'd like to know if anyone knows of any side-effects that may occur from upgrading from 512MB to 2GB, whether its to do with programs or the OS, as I have never upgraded RAM on anything before, or can you tell me if it will be necessary to backup files etc, and will I lost any programs? Suggestions much appreciated :)

  73. Resolved Question: Can I reformat an eMachines W3644 with an eMachines T2885 ...
  74. 20 Apr 2008 at 4:03am
So I accidentally DL'ed a file that flooded my computer with viruses thanks to the infamous Limewire...I tried spybot and norton, and they dont work. I've had this problem before with my old eMachines (T2885), pretty much its what I like to call Limewire's ScrewYouVirus, where popups come from everywhere even when I'm not using the internet, it shuts down every 5 seconds, and sometimes my startbar doesn't show. With my old computer I'd use the Restore Cd's to reformat my it, and it'd work fine. I tried doing that with my new computer... but its having problems. I currently have an "eMachines Operating System Disc" (thats what it says on the label) and it says I can use it to reformat my computer. I do as it says and when I insert the disc when it tells me, the popup window stays up and blocks out the 2nd one that tells me its copying files. Then it doesn't tell me anything else and only opens the disc drive randomly, and I'm stuck. So...T2885 time? Am I using the wrong disc(s)? Halp!

After I press browse and open the folder where the image I want to upload is from photobucket, it's not there. It is in jpg format just like many other images in that folder but most of them aren't visable in the folder either when I know they are there because they all show from the paint program. I even tryed typing the name of the file and press open from photobucket but it says it doesn't exists. I never in my life thought I would have a delima as strange as this. I have no idea what the heck is going on. I also tryed to save the image as jpg in other folders but photobucket never see's it anywhere on my system. I hope some one can help me, I am using Vista.

Details are that when I ran my antivirus like usual and left it there running for 30 min, my computer started to get slower, so I restarted the computer and the computer could not run the OS system and had troubleshooting. Currently, I cannot run safe mode or anything else of that matter. The OS system that I was using was Windows Vista. The only idea I have was that a virus somehow went in the computer and logded itself to the system folder, or a hacker hacked my computer and somehow corrupted the execution file. Please help, have important documents in there. I found that the file window.exe was corrupted because when I booted it, it said that it could NOT run that file. Update: I can run safe mode, however the computer is very very very slow when running. So I am thinking now that it is a virus. Now I find that my hard drive is making this clicking sound and I suspect that it is going to die soon. The hardware that I am using is a Seagate Internal Hard Drive. Somehow this clicking sound happened all of a sudden when the computer first froze.

  89. Resolved Question: How do I totally delete my C: drive, and promote my D:(sla...
  90. 19 Apr 2008 at 7:59pm
I had windows xp home edition pre-installed on my Sony Vaio, on the C: drive, and somehow it stopped loading windows at all, so I ordered all the recovery disks from Sony, and it still didn't work, so I used a friends windows xp disk and installed in on the slave drive (D:) and while it does work, it works very slowly and sluggishly. The C: drive is all but erased, with the exception of a few system files that cannot be removed (at least, I can't). I basically think that the windows files that are on my C: drive (which are "preinstall environment files) are somehow slowing up the other copy of windows xp that I am able to use on the slave drive. I want to totally remove all traces of the pre-installed windows xp home. P.S. I've already tried to Format the C: drive and it doesn't work.

  93. Resolved Question: How do I set my XP back to factory settings?
  94. 19 Apr 2008 at 3:07pm
I found a few questions like this and looked at the answers but...there's this hitch. I don't think I have the "disc" I keep hearing about in the answers. If anything else came with my computer I didn't keep it on me, although I might not have tossed it. Usually when I get an "extra" that I think I'll never need, but I don't want to risk tossing it, I give it to my dad. But his filing system isn't the best in the world, and I'm thinking it's gone forever. What else can I do? Can I purchase a new disk like the one that's lost?

  97. Resolved Question: Ubuntu questions!!?
  98. 19 Apr 2008 at 2:29pm
Okay, I've been getting bored with Windows (XP) and I am wanting to explore something different -- Ubuntu Linux. I have a few questions about Ubuntu: 1) What is the best way to download Ubuntu? I have heard some say to download it to a CD rather than a hard drive. I don't have a large hard drive at only 30 Gig, and it is a large file, at over 600 Mg, so that would benefit me. How would running an OS from a CD work, though? This question obviously confuses me! 2) If I download Ubuntu, and would happen to dislike it for any reason, how would I go about deleting it, and switching back to Windows XP? 3) Or, if I download Ubuntu, would it automatically delete my current OS to where I couldn't get it back? Or could I simply do a system restore sort of thing? If you can answer any of these questions, I would much appreciate it! 10 points to the most easy to understand answer! (I'm obviously no computer genius... yet! haha.)

  99. Voting Question: How do i tell my school about a security hole?
  100. 19 Apr 2008 at 2:03pm
I discovered a security hole in my schools student information system. They are storing the database on a public share with Everyone permissions. This database contains EVERYTHING about the students. Now whats even worse is that i found a backdoor into the file server via terminal services, all the blackhat would need is a students username/pw for the school and they're in.... all the students info, including MINE. I got suspended multiple times in school for helping friends get internet access, print (to authorized printers) etc. So i have have the nerd stigma there and if i sent an anonymous email i believe they would know who sent it. Now do i risk getting in trouble with the law or risk some hacker selling my info to nigerians?< >
