  1. Resolved Question: Laptop keyboard problem-jumps back several words while typ...
  2. 16 Feb 2008 at 7:42pm
Lately when I type something, often the letter being typed will jump back several words on the same line or it will jump up and start to be typed several rows up. Really annoying and hard to type fast. Any solutions to this? I have tried moving the cursor around, it may jump back to where it was, but sometimes not even there. Don't know if this is a software or hardware problem. Have cleaned the keyboard and kept my fingers away from the cursor pad. Thanks for any help!

  6. 16 Feb 2008 at 6:56pm
The computer hard disk sounds very laboured at switch on. I'm looking for an external hard drive to act as back up for both data and systems. My thinking is that if the computer's hard disk dies then if I have it completely backed up I should be able to carry on with the same functionality from an alternative (external) hard drive. I think I need about 250GB. To be honest, I know less than nothing about IT hardware things so would appreciate any thoughts or advice. Many thanks in advance.

  7. Voting Question: Advice on choosing a countertop for our kitchen cupboards?
  8. 16 Feb 2008 at 6:47pm
My husband and I are currently fixing up the kitchen of an old farmhouse. We have chosen to salvage the current cupboards, updating them with a change in hardware, sink, and countertop. We are struggling on deciding what colour or type of countertop we should purchase. We would love granite, and are not huge fans of laminate (what we've seen so far). Our floors are maple, and the cabinets are dark oak. Our walls are deep beige on one side and a cranberry red on the other. We are looking for colour suggestions. We are afraid that black granite (although beautiful!) will make the kitchen too dark and unwelcoming. Currently there is a beige, laminate, 70's ish counter. Thank you.

  9. Resolved Question: How can I get started learning how to program dsPICs in C?
  10. 16 Feb 2008 at 4:52pm
I am familiar with programming 8-bit PIC microcontrollers in assembler and C, and am interested in learning how to build simple DSP projects using the dsPIC line of microcontrollers. I can handle the hardware end and the mechanics of programming using MPLAB etc; I'm looking for a good primer on how to get started using these chips in C/C++ (assembler looks to be less efficient here, from reading the datasheet.) I'm working with a dsPIC30F4013, but am mostly interested in the general way of working with them. For instance, how would I use the dsPIC to go about designing a DSP single-pole low-pass Butterworth filter with a cutoff of 1kHz? Alternatively, if you don't recommend using the dsPIC, I'm open to other suggestions as long as the parts are: * DIP form factor or similar, * relatively inexpensive, and * fairly easily programmed. (I know this is a large, complex topic; I'm mostly looking for a book or website recommendation to help me get started.) Thanks in advance.

  11. Resolved Question: How do i get my Dell to recognize CD's again`?
  12. 16 Feb 2008 at 4:35pm
So, I have had this computer since last Christmas and it has been working great until the other day I tried to put in a CD. The computer itself was not recognizing it. So, i went to control pannel and went to device manager and it saide this: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" The last time I put CD in about a month ago, it worked. How come it just stopped working like this? ***How can I fix it?***

I've been told that "everyone should create a perfect image backup of the entire hard disk on occasion".....especially those of us who like to make hardware changes. Since my 2001 computer didn't come with the XP disk, I'd like to have a good backup of my entire hard disk in case I ever need to restore it. Can I "copy/back it up" to a CD-RW or DVD-RW?

  41. Resolved Question: Help with repairing Windows XP?
  42. 16 Feb 2008 at 10:47am
Hi. I was wondering if someone could help me or give me a clue about the error I receive. When I try to repair my installation of Windows XP Professional, it goes up to the step called "Installing Windows". After that, it shows me the following error: "Hardware Installation The software you are installing for this hardware: ASUS Virtual Video Capture Device Driver has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. Do you want to continue installing the software for this hardware?" No matter what I choose, the computer will either restart or ask me for a disk labeled 'NVIDIA Network Bus Installation Disk #1', which I dont have. When I first installed Windows, I didn't have this problem. Thank you. I do have the original drivers that came with it, but when I put in the CD it just restarts. The original drivers are not labeled as XP asks.

  45. Resolved Question: Should i return my Macbook?
  46. 16 Feb 2008 at 10:45am
Yes, it has a faster processor, its a 2.2ghz processor with 1 gig of ram and 120 gig hard drive, it has the leopard operating system and never crashes, its fast and never lags and i love it. But the thing is, since i got it, theres been nothing but work work work, i have had to find different programs for everything i do, yes this is fine, but that accounts for nothing, the built in mic and cam cannot be used on msn, and the alternate msn is faulty and renders the cam and mic useless as the condition is low, the majority of the computing population uses msn, and alot of my friends and teachers use it too and without being able to use hardly any sort of msn attraction its useless. Yes, vista have made it so you have to buy new hardware to make them efficient, but how is mac any different? i cant use printers/scanners or anything for my macbook so what was the point in paying over £1000 for it? Yes, its more quiet, and faster running, but its too expensive when i cant use it efficiently It would take too long to name everything that isnt compatible with a mac, but with a vista pc the computability with hardware is only the problem, anything online is 100% compatible. And i am also extremly good with computers, and a mac is just too much work, should i replace it with a vista laptop or not?

  57. Resolved Question: Problem setting 1 SATA and 2 IDE hard drives?
  58. 16 Feb 2008 at 6:34am
Hi All, I am having a problem setting up my computer with the following hardware: 1SATA 160Gb drive 1IDE 120Gb drive as Master on IDE0 1IDE 80Gb drive as Slave on IDE0 DVD-RW as Master on IDE1 DVD-RW as Slave on IDE1 The first two hard drives both contain Windows XP but I am now willing to boot from SATA. In BIOS I can see all three drives and have the option to set: SATA Disabled, Auto, Enhanced, Combined. I also have an option to select which hard drive to boot from. The problem that I have is if I boot from IDE, then the SATA drive can be seen under My Computer but if I boot from SATA, the IDE drives are not found. I tried connecting only one IDE as slave and disconnecting the master BUT when booting from SATA, the IDE drive is not found. Any hints? Thanks, Adriano Thanks for replying. My mainboard is ECS 865PE-A V2.0 I am not willing to use RAID. The optical drives can be found by Windows. Only the IDE hard drives cannot be found. At the moment am booting from SATA but have messed around with many BIOS settings and so far was only able to do 2 things: 1) Boot from SATA and find no other hard drives 2) Boot from IDE and find SATA in My Computer Thanks Again PROBLEM RESOLVED Am sure many find this useful. I solved the problem. From BIOS, you have to set the mode to Enhanced. This allows 6 hard drives to be used. Then from Boot Prioirty select the drive connected to the SATA. Windows will strat from SATA drive and after a fre seconds will recognize the new drives. If you have only one IDE to connect together with SATA, make sure to set this as Master and not Slave else it will not work. It all depends on the mainboard type of course!

  59. Resolved Question: Do you like birds?
  60. 16 Feb 2008 at 5:10am
A fellow walks into a pet store and asks to buy a canary. The proprietor replies, "I'm fresh out, but I DO have a parakeet." The customer insists on a canary, until the shop owner informs him that a parakeet can be made to sound like a canary if one files the beak just so. "But be careful not to file too much off, or the parakeet will drown when he goes to take a drink of water." The potential customer decides that this is complete bullshit, but thanks the shop owner politely and leaves, sans parakeet. He goes into another pet shop and asks for a canary -- no luck. "But", says the shop owner, "I do have a parakeet, and if you file the beak just so, it can be made to sound just like a canary." He goes on to explain that filing off too much beak will jeopardize the bird's life, due to the potential for drowning when he takes a drink. The fellow finally decides that there is some merit to these claims and buys the parakeet. "Besides", he thinks to himself, "parakeets are much cheaper." His next stop is a hardware store, where he wanders into the file section, holding his recently purchased bird. The owner wanders by and asks of he needs some help. The new bird owner sheepishly explains how he intends to make his parakeet sing like a canary. The hardware store owner knowingly picks up a file and hands it to him. "Here, a Nichols #2 bastard file. But be careful not to file too much off, or the poor beastie might drown." The bird and file owner thanks the hardware store owner and leaves for home. A few weeks later, the bird owner wanders into the hardware store. The owner, recognizing him, asks how he made out with the parakeet. The fellow looks down and sadly reports "Bird's dead". The hardware store owner shares his sorrow and asks "Filed off too much beak?" To which the former bird owner replies "Nah, he was dead when I took him out of the vise."

I have an iPod Shuffle that I had synced music too. I ejected it the proper way and all but just as I unplugged it my PC powered down. The whole machine just died. I am able to turn the computer on but I can not get any monitor picture. All the fans sound to be working though. I built this computer a couple months back with all new hardware. I have never had this problem before with any previous iPods. Does anyone have any idea as to why my PC died when I unplugged my iPod Shuffle?

  67. Resolved Question: 1966 mustang 289 a/t disc brake conversion?
  68. 16 Feb 2008 at 3:09am
alright i have manual drums brakes and i'd like to convert to front power disc brakes with dual bowl master cylinder. in the future, i'd like to do a rack and pinion kit also. cjponyparts. com sells a bundle kit with: Crossmember for Tubular Control Arms Motor Mount Kit Pair of Spindles 11? Complete Front Disc Brake Kit Pair of Stainless Steel Brake Hoses Pair of Coil Springs Set of Upper & Lower Tubular Control Arms Manual or Power Rack & Pinion with Tie Rods Pair of Gas Shocks Pair of Inner Fender Panels 1? Front Sway Bar with Bushings All Hardware my question is what would recommend, buying the brakes right now and rack and pinion later, what kind of power brakes w/ dual bowl master for a cheap price, would i still have to pump the brakes to a stop, and is the kit above worth it. i'm kinda tight on money right now ,but my pony is a daily driver so safety is becoming an issue. one last question, would i be able to do this job by myself?

  77. Voting Question: Question on laptop hard drive?
  78. 15 Feb 2008 at 10:57pm
I'm not an expert with laptop hardware. I believe my hard drive is going bad (it's an older used Dell). When I boot it up the hard drive is making more of a grinding noise and often the OS won't boot up. Removing the hard drive and putting it back in normally has been fixing it. Since my expertise is not with laptops, does it matter what kind of hard drive I buy considering it is a dell? A 60 GB will do fine. I don't want to spend much money on a use laptop I bought off ebay 1 year ago. Don't have any other major issues with it. I believe it's an ATA. There is not an extra cable for a sata connection. It removes from the side and snaps in. It is more of a humming noise then a grinding I guess. If it's tilted the noise goes away. I don't think it's an OS issue. I Just got a message the hard drive was not found, but it did boot up the second time. It's an toshiba HD. I didn't see any errors in event viewer I had problems trying to create a disket. I believe the HD it is bad. I ran a chkdsk and it found some errors. Sometimes I get lucky and it boots, other times it doesn't.

  81. Resolved Question: I plug my printer into my laptop and nothing happens?
  82. 15 Feb 2008 at 10:01pm
When I plug my printer into my laptop nothing happens. Nothing at all. I installed the CD that came with the printer, but when I go to plug the printer into the USB, nothing happens on my PC, no warning saying "install new hardware," no pop ups, no noises, nothing. Its like I never plugged the thing in even though I did. The USB port is not dead, I've already tested it several times to see that it is in fine and working condition. My PC is a HP Pavillion Entertainment Notebook, the printer is an HP PSC 1210 all in one. I am running Vista. The printer is on, the cord works, it is plugged in on both sides. I can plug the printer into my other laptop and it works fine, but when I plug it into my new one, nothing happens.

And, just for fun, how much hardware and energy would you need to go about creating such a powerful magnetic field? Would such a field even be safe for humans? And if so, (once again, just for fun), how much hould I charge people to come and float in my "anti-gravity" field? Serious, not-so-serious, and thoroughly scientific answers all accepted.

  97. Resolved Question: No audio or sound icon?
  98. 15 Feb 2008 at 7:52pm
I have recently had my computer revamped. Before this, the sound was working, but I had no volume control icon on my icon tray. Now, there is still no icon but also no sound at all, from internal or external speakers. I already tried "Add Hardware", and my "Multimedia Audio Controller" is missing drivers. I do not know what type of sound card I have, and tried checking it through System Information, but it is not detected. I know that I have one as it worked before.... Any ideas?

  99. Resolved Question: Was he being serious or sarcastic?
  100. 15 Feb 2008 at 7:51pm
My husband just called. He's gone on a camping trip. My water heater quit this afternoon after he left, so I went to the hardware store and bought a new heating element and put it in. When he called, I told him what I'd done and he was like "Wow! That turns me on!"< >
