2.) Analyze your competitor's website
a.) Analyzing keyword density :
- go to your competitor's page and count how many times your main
keyword expressions appear in the body text of his page
- write down WHERE he has placed those keyword expressions ( e.g. first 200 words= 2 x , 200-500 words = 1 x and 500-1000 = 3 x etc.)
- view the source code of his page. You can do this by clicking on
"View" and then "view source" . This is the exact html-format and you have to look in the sections "meta tag keywords" and "meta tag
description" which are both right at the beginning after the "title tags".
See where he has placed those keyword expressions and learn from it.
b.) Analyzing link popularity
As you already might know, link popularity plays a very important role in determining whether your site should be ranked high in the search engines. When analyzing your competitor's website, you should try to determine how high his link popularity is.
There are two resources for doing this research. One is online and the other one is a free software you can download on your computer.
Online you can use Link Popularity Check :

At the site, click on the link "Free link popularity check" at the bottom. By the way, I've already seen software like this which is sold on the Internet. Why should anybody pay when it's available for free...?
If you can find more sites linking to yours than to his site, you might be able to take over your competitor's top search engine position if you've optimized your page for the same keyword expression.
3.) Improve your own link popularity :
a.) Use Software for Reciprocal Links

You'll have to learn quite a lot before you will be able to use this program called Zeus. They have some videos which will show you some examples of how to use it but I still found it quite difficult to use. It's not very easy to customize the template exactly in the style of your own site.
It also requires quite a lot of input before it finally can crawl the sites on its own to find relevant sites which are related to your site. Moreover, you should be very selective with which sites you are exchanging links.

I like this one even more in terms of user- friendliness and appearance. In my opinion, this one is much more intuitively to handle as it doesn't require you to look in the help files after every single step you've been doing. They've received quite a lot of awards for their software and they've a demo version which you can download.
If you have a very high link popularity, you might find your site at the top even if your site is not completely optimized for the keyword that
someone has searched for on his favorite search engine.
You should avoid trading links with webmasters who have their site on one of the free webspace providers like Yahoo/Geocities etc.
This can harm your site more than it helps...
b.) Write articles in your area of expertise
It can't be stressed enough : Writing articles is one of the best promotion methods you can apply. Not only do you increase your expertise in the eyes of your customers and prospects but with your resource box, you have a very powerful way of advertising your website.
You can get visitors faster than with the search engines if you're publishing articles and additionally, you get a direct link to your site if other publishers make their issues available on their website, e.g. in their archive. This is even better than a reciprocal link because it doesn't require you to link back to that site.
Sometimes, you might find it very difficult to optimize your site just for one keyword expression. In most cases, you will have a set of keyword expressions which you want to use. Then you should create so-called doorway pages or hook pages. They will have exactly the keyword density you need and will also consider lots of factors more.
