  3. Information Literacy: Identify Your Sources (Otis College)

  4. 26 Jul 2007 at 2:04pm

    10 min - Jul 26, 2007

Identify what sources are good to use for your papers. Learn the difference between scholarly, academic, professional, popular, and substantive news publications and the benefits and uses for each. To effectively research for college-level papers, students must learn how to evaluate articles in journals and magazines. In this video, an art history professor at Otis College of Art and Design discusses some of the criteria useful in determining whether the information found is scholarly, popular, or professional. The same evaluation criteria may be applied to information found on websites and in books. Please see also the Otis Information Literacy website: http://library.otis.edu/informationliteracy.html

  5. 15 Views of a Node Link Graph: An Information Visualization Portfolio

  6. 28 Jun 2006 at 3:00am

    1 hr - Jun 28, 2006

Google TechTalks June 28, 2006 Tamara Munzner received a BS in 1991 and a PhD in 2000 from Stanford. Her current research interests are information visualization, graph drawing, and dimensionality reduction. She was the IEEE Symposium on Information Visualization Program/Papers Co-Chair in 2003 and 2004. ABSTRACT Information visualization, or infovis, is the interactive computer-based visual representation of abstract datasets. I will use collections of linked nodes as the launching point for a discussion of fifteen different approaches to infovis. Node-link graphs appear in many application domains, and people can perform many tasks faster or more effectively when they can manipulate a well-chosen visual representation of these graphs. A major challenge within infovis is how to handle the large datasets that occur in the real world. Designing algorithms with scalable speed and memory complexity is only part of the solution. The visual representation must also provide an appropriate abstraction, often requiring exploration across multiple levels of detail, to be comprehensible to the human in the loop. The talk will include examples in application domains ranging from web browsing to bioinformatics to computational linguistics, and datasets from thousands to millions of items.

A coalition of public interest groups today called for the federal government to end 30 years of "deliberations and fact finding" by issuing a useful final regulation to require standardized labeling information on beer, wine and distilled spirits products. At a news conference in Washington, members of a broad-based coalition of public health leaders and consumer advocacy organizations used the occasion of Alcohol Awareness Month to release a white paper laying out the need for an easy-to-read, standardized label that will provide consumers with complete information about alcohol and calorie content per serving. Issued as a nationwide call to action, the white paper concludes that easily accessible alcohol labeling can play an important role in reducing alcohol abuse, drunk driving, and the many diseases attributable to excessive alcohol intake, such as liver cirrhosis and cancers of the upper gastrointestinal tract. 27. Brian Guthrie: DUSI -- Rich User Interactions with Diagrams in Scientific Papers

  28. 16 Nov 2005 at 7:00pm

    22 min - Nov 17, 2005

The DUSI work was undertaken for Professor Futrelle's Biological Knowledge Laboratory ("BKL") as part of their efforts to help biologists derive greater meaning from their literature, of which one major part is diagram parsing. The presentation will include slides on the system itself, its API, screenshots, and background material on diagram parsing. The slides will also cover goals for the continuing evolution of the system. There will be a live demo of the current working version of the system, with two different diagrams: one a fictional proof-of-concept diagram which has been fully parsed and provides an illustration of parser-DUSI integration, and another which has been reconstructed from a diagram located at the URL above and provides an illustration of the end-user experience. Possible topics also include open-access publishing, Java/Swing development, and API design. More information on DUSI can be found at http://www.ccs.neu.edu/home/bguthrie/dusi Tags: Northeastern University, CCIS, ACM, nuACM, RALPH

  29. Richard Oakley:Sunday Times/Hit piece on "We Are Change IRL"

  30. 22 Apr 2008 at 4:24pm

    2 min - Apr 22, 2008

http://www.wiseupjournal.com/?p=271 Wise Up Journal by Greg O'Brien Looking into the control and influence of the mainstream media in Ireland and papers like The Sunday Times Irish Edition highlights some very disturbing information. This paper is owned by News Corporation, the world's largest media conglomerate controlled by Rupert Murdoch, Chairman and CEO. His role in forming public opinion both in Britain and America in the lead up to the invasion of Iraq has been well documented. A staggering list of media assets owned by News Corporation, including SKY and FOX News, is available on Wikipedia: Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism is a 2004 documentary film by progressive filmmaker Robert Greenwald that is highly critical of Fox News (click here to view it): Outfoxed examines how media empires, led by Rupert Murdoch's Fox News, have been running a "race to the bottom" in television news. This film provides an in-depth look at Fox News and the dangers of ever-enlarging corporations taking control of the public's right to know. Here are some quotes from former Fox employees: "We were stunned because up until that point we were allowed to do legitimate news, suddenly we were ordered from the top to carry propaganda" - Frank O Donnell, Former Fox News Producer "I've heard directly from folks, both as correspondence and as bookers who've expressed very grave reservations, almost as if they are being monitored by a Stalinist system" - Larry Johnson, Former Fox News Contributor http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6737097743434902428&q=Outfoxed%3A+Rupert+ Murdoch%27s+War+on+Journalism+&ei=wEQKSMubEajkiQL9soC5BA&hl=en Google Videos Link Richard Oakley, a reporter for the Sunday Times seems to be well moulded in the Murdoch genre of 'journalism'. His hit piece in the 20/04/2008 edition on We Are Change Ireland contains quite a few misrepresentations and attempts to discredit the group. The article has almost no resemblance to the interview he conducted with one of the members. The full audio of the interview is on the left (just press the play button). Here are some of the quotes from the article which you can compare to the interview to see what passes for journalism in The Sunday Times: "Proinsias De Rossa must have wondered was it something he said. How else to explain the physical assault that the 67-year old experienced as he left Liberty Hall last Monday evening" Oakley makes a very serious allegation of assault, something the Gardai haven't even stated occurred, perhaps Oakley should let the Gardai know about this assault and pass on any new information he has about it. Sunday Times: "We Are Change Ireland, a "peace movement" and "community of truth seekers" with an appropriate acronym - WACI- " Most people in the alternative media and truth organizations are fully aware of these kind of tags to discredit them from mainstream sources. There's no originality in Oakley's article, just the usual copy and paste gutter journalism. Sunday Times: "The clip shows the MEP getting annoyed about being closely followed and intensely questioned before trying to push people out of the way. He falls as a mild scuffle breaks out, before the clip ends abruptly. It does not prove anything in it's brevity" Oakley seems to be contradicting his earlier allegation of a physical assault here, and one wonders about the integrity of this form of journalism, full of innuendos and contradictions with no real substance. We Are Change Ireland informed Oakley that they are willing to hand over the full un-cut footage to the Gardai as part of their investigation of the event, as they are completely innocent. We Are Change Ireland are seeking a full retraction of this article. Oakley has completely left out the question about De Rossa voting in the European Parliament to not respect the vote of the Irish people. As an anecdote, when my Grandfather was informed of Mr. De Rossa's answer of "grow up" to the question "Why did you vote not to respect the Irish referendum if they vote NO on the Lisbon Treaty?", my Grandfather's reply was "maybe in three years when I'm 90 I will be grown up enough for that answer. It is a very serious situation in any democracy when the media is owned and controlled by a small number of individuals, which is now the situation in this country. They control what is news and what isn't, which subtly controls the minds of the majority of the population, most of whom get their news from mainstream sources. When they then seek to discredit small alternative sources and groups, like the big bully in the schoolyard it's clear that something is going vitally wrong and danger signals should be flashing for the people of Ireland
